The Islanders did not win the next 4 Cups. They suffered a devastating loss to the Rangers in '79 that had Islander fans calling for changes. Turned out the biggest change was trading for Butch Goring in 1980, which no one gave much thought to at the time but is now considered to be the first significant trade deadline deal in NHL history.

Not gonna defend the playoff history of the current group (because no one honestly can), but there's a lot of myth attached to the 70s Leafs.
Did any 70s Leafs won the Rocket or Hart?
Sittler, Salming, McDonald were great but even in their prime, don't think they are as good as AM, MM, Willie and JT.

Pure talent wise, this past 6 yrs(when JT signed), are the most talented Leafs team over the past 30 years or more if not ever. The fact that they can only muster ONE playoffs series win in 6 years is pathetic. There is really no reason why they didn't beat BJs or Habs or even Bruins last season when all of the Cs on those teams would been 3C on the Leafs.

They lack the compete level or are not willing to play outside their comfort zone. It is why come contract time I say squeeze them but the Leafs give them everything. Most unlikeable core ever for me. It is sad when the high under Shanahan was after losing to the Caps in 6.

Just my humble opinion but I think you’re under rating Salming and Sittler. I’d have them ahead of everyone aside from Matthews. The Sittler Salming era had worse depth, goaltending, coaching etc. I feel they would have more playoff success than our core on todays Leaf team.

I don't accept people lumping Nylander with Tavares, Marner and Matthews as playoff under performers.

It's unfair and inaccurate.

Excellent point. Not only does he maintain his regular season form come playoff time, he did it while making 4 million less than the other 3. Anybody trying to lump him in with the others have an agenda.

The 70's belonged to the Canadiens, with the Leafs gifting 2 Cup to the Broad Street bullies. (Parent)

Leafs had a good team for most of the 70's with Sittler (age 23+).

But not good enough.

NEW YORK — Colorado Avalanche defenceman Cale Makar, Toronto Maple Leafs winger William Nylander and Montreal Canadiens forward Patrik Laine were named the NHL’s three stars for the week ending Dec. 22.

Makar, the week's top star, led all skaters with eight points in four games, helping Colorado climb to third in the Central Division.

The 26-year-old Makar leads all NHL defencemen in scoring this season with 11 goals and 34 assists for 45 points in 36 games.

Nylander was named the second star after tallying five goals and two assists, including three multi-point outings, for Toronto.

Laine’s five power-play goals powered Montreal to three straight wins, earning him third-star honours.

The Finnish forward has been a force on the man advantage this season, scoring eight goals in nine games since returning from a pre-season knee injury.

10 points in his last 5 games. Usually gets the short end of the stick when Matthews is injured and has to play with some suspect linemates.

It is completely accurate.

Nylander as some kind of playoff hero on this team is laughable in comparison to Leafs of the past and players on other teams who really perform in the playoffs.

It’s a cope narrative.

Your hero has played at a 30 goal, 65 point per 82 game pace in the playoffs.

The whole bunch of them need to be much better.

Since 2019-2020, Nylander has played to a playoff pace of 41 g 75 points, while being paid 7 million per year and one of those playoffs he played with Galchenyuk and Kerfoot as his linemates because Tavares was injured.

Meanwhile Marner in the same span has played to a pace of 15 goal 73 points while being paid 10.98 million per year, playing primarily with Matthews as his Center.

Marner made 55% more money and scored way less and produced less point/game.

Great return for a 7 million dollar player. Very bad return for a 10.893 million dollar player.

Post 67, who has really performed outside of Gilmour.

Clark had less PPG than Nylander. Sundin had 70 in 79.

Sittler was pretty good. No Leaf has done anything really since 67. A few iconic moments as they won as a team.

Matthews and Marner are top 10 alltime PPG in playoffs. Nylander is 13th.

Now they just have to add a few series wins

I think some lumped Nylander in with the double digits for years, when he was 5th. on the team for compensation.

$7mm + 50% = 10.5mm

Over the regular seasons and playoffs: p/gp regular season, p/gp playoffs, %drop:

Matthews 1.15 .87 24%
Marner 1.11 .88 21%
Tavares .95 .63 34%
Nylander .88 .80 9%

One of these things is not like the other three.

Imagine trying to lump in the guy who made more than 50% less money and while having the least playoff decline.

Money brings more expectations for performance but doesn’t change the evaluation of actual performance.

Nylander isn’t better in the playoffs because he produced less in the regular season - and therefore didn’t have as far to drop. (or because the poor guy was making “only” 7 million dollars a year to play a game).

This narrative around Nylander is pathetic. Even if people think he is the best of our bunch it’s just sad in comparison to real playoff performers. Get back to me when he puts up a big playoff and this team accomplishes anything.

Our star players need to be much better.

Yes, 18 goals over the past 41 playoffs games is not acceptable.

Especially, when you're making $7mm.

Can you imagine if he was doing that while being a Top 10 paid player?

Nylander scored some goals in a cherry picked set of games, ok. He is also a disaster defensively even when he’s been sheltered a ton, and is likely around break even or a net loss even in a cherry picked sample.

Stop trying to make this guy something he isn’t (at least yet), it’s embarrassing for a fan base that should, and does, expect a lot more.

It's very simple, he not only lived up to his contract, he outperformed it. The others did not. Why do I have a feeling I'll find you in the other guys thread telling us how great he is.
