The Islanders did not win the next 4 Cups. They suffered a devastating loss to the Rangers in '79 that had Islander fans calling for changes. Turned out the biggest change was trading for Butch Goring in 1980, which no one gave much thought to at the time but is now considered to be the first significant trade deadline deal in NHL history.

Not gonna defend the playoff history of the current group (because no one honestly can), but there's a lot of myth attached to the 70s Leafs.
Did any 70s Leafs won the Rocket or Hart?
Sittler, Salming, McDonald were great but even in their prime, don't think they are as good as AM, MM, Willie and JT.

Pure talent wise, this past 6 yrs(when JT signed), are the most talented Leafs team over the past 30 years or more if not ever. The fact that they can only muster ONE playoffs series win in 6 years is pathetic. There is really no reason why they didn't beat BJs or Habs or even Bruins last season when all of the Cs on those teams would been 3C on the Leafs.

They lack the compete level or are not willing to play outside their comfort zone. It is why come contract time I say squeeze them but the Leafs give them everything. Most unlikeable core ever for me. It is sad when the high under Shanahan was after losing to the Caps in 6.

Just my humble opinion but I think you’re under rating Salming and Sittler. I’d have them ahead of everyone aside from Matthews. The Sittler Salming era had worse depth, goaltending, coaching etc. I feel they would have more playoff success than our core on todays Leaf team.

The 70's belonged to the Canadiens, with the Leafs gifting 2 Cup to the Broad Street bullies. (Parent)

Leafs had a good team for most of the 70's with Sittler (age 23+).

But not good enough.
