For some reason I see Nylander in a Penguins jersey and Matthews going home to Arizona.

But rest easy Leafs fans....my crystal ball says it will be two years of pain with Marner and Tavares at the helm. A chance to draft high and in '26 the Leafs will back up the Brinks truck to McDavid.
Why would a top 5 player want to play for the Coyotes I dont understand this obsession with Mathews playing for the yotes

That team has been a joke for 20 years

They screw up every player they draft

The Management is always ass

That team needs to be relocated its a failed market

Is Nylander the backup option for the Leafs to re-sign if Matthews walks next summer? I feel that he is. But if they resign Matthews then Nylander is gone. There is no way the Leafs can afford his next contract. He's on pace for 40+ goals, 90 pts this season. What does he get though?
Nope! We're keeping both and hf will cry! Matthews will be 14x8(he's on mcds tier, suck it hf!!) nylander will be 9x8 . Tavares comes off in a few years so we'll have the money for when mcd wants to get serious (that lottery face!)

Good chance both Nylander and Matthews re-up in Toronto with extensions. Keep in mind that Tavares $11M comes off the books the next season. That frees up a lot of cap and there is no way Toronto re-signs him anywhere close to that.

If Matthews leaves, big if…I think L.A. is where he goes. L.A. Will be his first choice. Arizona will be 2nd on his list. I don’t see him going anywhere else.

Nylander is going to get paid for sure. $9M AAV easily. Perhaps both Willy and Matthews sign extensions in Toronto and then McDavid wants to come home and decides to join Matthews, Nylander and Marner. I have a very very strong suspicion that McDavid is coming home.

I would argue trading Rielly makes a lot sense right now. Gives the Leafs a ton of addition cap to spend at the deadline and provides flexibility for next year. Gotta keep Willie.

Trade Rielly and if Muzzin doesn’t come back from his health issues, that’s a ton work with.

ALL IN.

Tough call. The guy is turning in to money.

There's one hard year coming for the Leafs for cap issues with Tavares, but I could see them shipping out Johnny T before I could see them shipping out Nylander due to age vs production right now. Retain a bit on the last year of Tavares at the deadline and try to renew him in next years off season at a nice price to retire a leaf knowing that Nylander is now under contract for the next 6-8 years

Always am fascinated with the Leaf Fans love of Nylander.
The dude is a good player, dont get me wrong, however he will be 27 before the end of the season and has never finished a regular season with a point per game or better production.
On the flip side, since JT joined the Leafs he has been a .97 point per game player to Nylander at .85.
Nylander is a career .80 point per game player, and at least one poster suggested they sign him for 10 million AAV? Tkachuk is a .91 point per game player and he just signed for 9.5. Are we really suggesting that Nylander is a better player?
On the flip side, Austin Matthews is going to going to wait to sign any extension until July 1, when the actual new cap kicks in. While I cant see him getting the max percentage of 20% I do think he is going to land at 15+ million.
Must be Dubas' HF account if they think hes worth 10 mill aav.

so what?

Going home is appealing to some guys....Just ask JT
good for JT. This isnt like it was back in the 90's early 00's when everyone wanted to come home to toronna cause they grew up watching hockey night in Canada. Stamkos didnt come home. Lots of guys dont come home.

Brilliant.

Keep the 4, who have shown they can't get it done and get rid of the 1 solid Dman they have (who happens to be signed to a long term deal that is also a fair cap hit)

Im speechless.
Habs fans shouldn't be telling anyone how to build a team.

Your core is a midget 2C that get's caved in by elite QoC and a winger who is worse than Nylander.

McDavid will, better pick a new team to cheer for when it happens.

One thing is for sure, star players will never go to Edmonton willingly, Edmonton has to trap them there.

So he can sign for more 4yrs later. Maybe after that comes a 3yr 16AAV. Matthews seems like a smart businessman, maybe not a playoff warrior but a smart businessman.
Patrice Bergeron after 6 seasons: 9 points in 18 playoff games

"Not a playoff warrior" I take it as well?

Any idea what those 4 would each cost on AAV?

Matthews at 13.5 million per at minimum
Marner at 12.5 million per at minimum
Nylander at 9 million per at minimum
McDavid at 15 million per at minimum
Rielly at 7.5 million per

That's nearly 58 million for 5 players even if the cap is at 90 million in a few years.

They were good enough to dispatch of your Leafs but you go ahead and lash out cause you got no argument.

The usual HFB stuff. Can't argue the point you insult the poster or his team......

not if the Dubas keeps screwing up with overpayments and managing the cap he wont. Anyway you have no clue what he'll do when contracts up.

Unlikely. His stats aren't like to improve as he approaches 30, so his bargaining power will be diminished, plus the security of a 7 or 8-year-deal.

That's why almost no top players sign short term deals for the first UFA contract. They get their yearly salary locked in at their current playing level knowing that in 5-6 years time (or sooner, no names mentioned), when they are most likely dropping off offensively they're still get "27 year old, prime years" salary.

And Matthews is building a legacy with a 100-year-old franchise in Toronto that despite its playoff failures has been a very strong team for 5+ years and will likely continue to be so for the foreseeable future. He abandons all that to play for a perennial lottery pick franchise just to be closer to family and warmer winters? No Mitch or Willie on his wing either. Yeah, no.
