Is Nylander the backup option for the Leafs to re-sign if Matthews walks next summer? I feel that he is. But if they resign Matthews then Nylander is gone. There is no way the Leafs can afford his next contract. He's on pace for 40+ goals, 90 pts this season. What does he get though?

Tavares contract comes off the books a year after, so they would have to find a way to make it work for one year until that happens.

the cap crunch will only exist for one year. JT's contract ends one year after Matthews and Nylander.

Tavares, if he wants to re sign, will have to take a significant pay cut given his age. If he wants more he can of course go to another team.

But the savings from that will cover the raises for Matthews, Nylander, and Marner. Along with the cap rising.

So yes, there will be one tough year, they may need to gut a lot of depth (even more than now) and maybe they won't be a great team. But if Matthews and Nylander both want to play in Toronto (and there's nothing to suggest otherwise), I think Dubas will make it happen even if it means one bad year.

This Tavares is gone and we should have some good replacement options, unless he wants to take sweet heart deals which he honestly should to play in Torona.

Hawks will sign Matthews and Nylander. They’ll be nice adds to a top 6 with Bedard, Nazar, Kane, and DeBrincat :yo:

Matthews is going nowhere... If anyone is going, it's Rielly.. Dubas will make it work

Are raises really in the cards for Matthews and Marner? They haven't won anything for the entire length of their current contracts, which have been absolute boat anchors that have prevented the team from acquiring adequate depth or even a passable d-core. Raises would just double-down on Dubas' failure.

Can't they come to a 1yr agreement with a ready to sign 7 yr contract the following or is that not allowed?

Asking him to take a one year deal sounds pretty dangerous honestly. I'm sure that Nylander is aware that if something goes wrong during said bridge year it will impact the next deal.

With the cap going up by 3 to 5 million for the 23-24 season,Matthew's 11 mil, Nylander's 6.9, 11.4 mil in Muzzin ,Gio, Brodie off the books and Murray's 4.6 off the books that's 36 to 39 million.
They easily sign both players. With the prospects in the system that are becoming NHL ready they will be adding approx. 3 ELC's a year into the mix.

I hope they sign him again. I mean the past 4ish years has shown what giving a huge chunk of the cap to 4 forwards and then having to penny pinch for every other spot on the roster can do....

I hope they continue this path.
Who needs William Nylander when you can have cap space instead. Like people don't realize if we lost Nylander we would have a Nylander sized hole in the lineup that we would have to go out and replace....which would cost either that cap space, major assets or both. If you think Nylander on his current contract is an issue for the Leafs you have lost the plot. Straight up.

For some reason I see Nylander in a Penguins jersey and Matthews going home to Arizona.

But rest easy Leafs fans....my crystal ball says it will be two years of pain with Marner and Tavares at the helm. A chance to draft high and in '26 the Leafs will back up the Brinks truck to McDavid.

With the amount of young players in or ready to make the jump into the NHL I don't think the Leafs will have any issue signing Matthews or Nylander. I mean just this season Holmberg, Robertson, and Anderson are NHL ready.
