Agreed.

Nylander into this season has been better than Marner so far. I don’t think many will debate that. But past their rookie seasons, Marner has been better. And I expect Marner to come back and still finish strong. He’s a consistent 20 goals 60 assists. So even in a down year I expect PPG.

Just imagine how good our team will be when Marner finds his form…that’ll be dangerous I tell you. 4+ 75 point players, 2 being on the edge of 95-100. Vezina goaltending and solid, although not right now, defence.

I’m actually excited for Marner to get back and eager that he starts to produce. Even if I have been critical of him, sometimes too much, I’d rather him be like normal than be me being right.

Yes, can you imagine the current Nylander and marner pre-playoffs last year?

And Matthews scoring like he has without marner.

Future looks really good if the old marner returns.

Using raw points isn't useful when Marner is getting way more TOI and is stapled to PP1 (even if you ignore PK minutes). I would be really disappointed if Marner didn't out-produce Nylander with the opportunities he gets.
Better players get more minutes, what a concept.

Is there anyway we would be able to keep Nylander after his contract is done? I need some hope here cuz it feels like we absolutely shouldn't lose him.

Or, higher paid players typically get more minutes and better opportunities.

And don't tell me you don't think contracts influence player deployment because they definitely do. If Nick Ritchie wasn't signed for 2 years at 2m we wouldn't be seeing him anymore this season.

And we wouldn't be seeing Marner on PP1

Better players somehow manage to do less with more minutes?
So he out produced but did less. o_O
I knew I was going to regret replying to that post.

Tavares was signed under the impression that the core three would sign 7-8 year contracts (like all the other star players were doing at the time), and they could be reupped the year Tavares 11 mil is off the books as well as the cap supposed to be astronomically higher.

But as it is now, all 3 contracts expire with Tavares still on the books and covid messing up the cap.

As such, the leafs will lose at least one of Nylander, Matthews, Marner.

And I think these players will be out for blood on the ufa market. Covid made every player lose 20% of their contract value.

They'll of course do literally anything they can to re-sign Matthews. And I think that will be a heavy price. It's pretty much a guarantee they'll lose one of Nylander/Marner. And still pretty likely they lose both. All for one more year of a 35 year old Tavares...

there’s little to no reason right now to expect we’d have to lose 2 of the 3. Do you ever stop with the doom and gloom?

Lot of roster turnover will happen between now and when his contract is over (meaning salary can/will be freed up(. But I'm fairly confident that if management wants him, he'll stay a Leaf. The cap itself will also continue to rise over the next few seasons.

Edit: the cap in particular is looking to have a large bump just as Nylander and Matthews contracts expire. Timing couldn't be better for the Leafs NHL salary cap will rise $1M next season, Bettman confirms - TSN.ca

Marner averages more minutes a game but is pacing for less points so far this season, it's not a hard concept.

Nylander going PPG+ with an ATOI that would still be lower than Marner's lowest post-Babcock season is a pretty good sign he'd be putting up something in the 90s with Marner's 21-22 minutes stapled to Matthews no?

Thumbs up for Nylander.

A sign you are playing above expectations is that your HFBoards thread doesn’t get bumped for 2 weeks.

…. on another note:

Besides COVID, has will nye ever been injured ?

I don’t recall any injuries and we have no injury threads for him.

Hard to argue that.

Not his best right now. But with a little help from his friend Tavares , things might turn around soon. Scary close in points.

Him and Tavares have the exact same point lines. Pretty crazy.
Anyways I'm happy if all he ever is is a PPG guy. If you told anyone back in the day he would be a PPG guy they would have thought you were wacky. He will probably get 35 goals too and be the runner up in goals on our team too.

He has been totally disinterested in playing past 2 games .. but 3 games ago against Ducks he was BEST man on da ice .. I was hoping he would be more consistent .. maybe he can't get up for these weaker teams .. who knows???
