Will Scouch made a lot of detailed content on YouTube and his website about NHL prospects. He had unique data sets and really put a lot of effort into evaluating prospects.

He was one of the few content creators that made quality videos regarding prospects. Despite not agreeing with his rankings at times, the information he provided was very valuable to fans like myself. A very small community just got smaller.

He deleted all of his YouTube videos and is taking down all of his content.

Why delete all his YouTube videos if he is quitting all together? Leave them up, you worked hard on them.

I’m just speculating here but perhaps he got hired by a pro team and a stipulation was he had to go dark on the internet?

odd decision.

Anyway, always enjoyed his content even if it was flawed at times, he‘ll be missed.

I listened to his most recent stream. It’s not job related at this point. He said he wanted to do something different.

I wish he would’ve kept his videos up.

I hate cryptic announcements like this...

Like this tweet makes it sound like hes not stopping it personally, just stopping giving out his info to the public.

I could not tell which direction he was heading in during his live stream, whether it is hockey related or not. He mentioned he was also going to be leaving McKeen's.

Oh well, it was sort of fun to listen to someone being candid about their views on a player that was more precise than typical draft pundits. Most of the disagreements could be chalked up to what he values in prospects and simply catching off games by chance.

The independent scouting industry hasn’t been the same since Dennis MacInnis retired and ISS Hockey fell off. Dennis was one of the best, and their mentorship program helped many current pro scouts get to where they are now.

So few independent people left with credibility in this space.

I can’t comment on Dennis personally but I actually never thought their work was very good. They were good at making money through the mentorship program and getting mentees onto hockey staffs. But I think that was mostly because they had a ton of connections, not based on actual expertise. There are some excellent scouts in the public sphere, especially at EliteProspects.

Say what you will, but for 20 years, their final rankings would have 24-28 of the top 30-32 correct. And their missed first rounders were often gone by picks 40-45

They had one of the smallest budgets in the industry and absolutely came by everything based on their merit. Company was started in Dennis’ basement in small town Nova Scotia, never being propped up by connections or huge budgets.

He always had his interesting takes, but for the most part he was a good listen. If Brad Lambert ever becomes a star...Scouch was his number 1 supporter.
I think Lambert's performance in the WHL this year already validates those (like myself) who still had him as a top 5 prospect. There aren't many forwards from the 2022 draft who have been better since the new year. Cooley is probably the only guy who has been clearly better since January, and he was the only guy I had ahead of Lambert at the time of the draft. The other 2022 forwards I'd put in Lambert's tier since then would be Kulich, Savoie, and Wright.

I don't see how doing well in the WHL in his +1 season changes anything.

When he gets to play against kids and has an athletic advantage, he look great.

When he plays against men and doesn't have an athletic advantage and has to use his brain, he doesn't.

I think anyone could have told you he would look good in the CHL. I don't see how it alleviates the concerns for how he projects to pro hockey in any meaningful way.

He looked excellent in the training camp, the prospect tournament, NHL preseason, and during his first few weeks in the AHL (before getting injured and then getting COVID).

Did you watch him in preseason? He damn near made the Jets.

I did not watch Winnipeg Jets preseason games, no.

I thought Lambert was pretty easily the most impressive player with the puck on this stick last year of any players in the draft. I can understand why people would find him appealing. My concern with him was how little that translated into anything in Liiga given his ++ skating/puck skills combination. My concerns with him are similar to someone like Athanasiou, as far as they have great individual/athletic ability, but do not use their teammates well enough and do not see the ice well enough to take advantage of those gifts like they should.

So Lambert doing well in the WHL does not really do anything for me personally. You can get by in the WHL with those flaws in your game.

Not Gauthier? Over PPG in NCAA at a top 5 pick, leading his team in scoring with a strong two-way game. He looked better earlier in the season IMO but still deserves to be in this group for me. HM to Snuggerud as well

He's had no trouble at all using his teammates in the WHL, his passing has been a huge strength.

His performance against men this year has been pretty impressive:
5pts in 3gp in prospects tournament (led the tournament in scoring - lots of pro players in these tournaments)
2pts+2 7 SOG in 3gp in NHL preseason
3pts+2 7 SOG in 4gp in the AHL before getting injured & then getting COVID

I think people are really anchoring too much on his performance in Liga. I said this before the draft, but his game was made for smaller ice. And a structured, static league like Liga was a terrible fit for him.

Agreed on Gauthier - I debated including him there (I actually had him typed out but then removed him).

Snuggerud has been good but also benefits a lot from Cooley

People made a lot of Scouch loving Lambert or underrating/overrating certain players. But, he really taught me a lot about player evaluation.

It’s his right, but I wish he didn’t delete all of his content because it was a really good source of information for anybody interested in evaluating players. His breakdowns were the best you’ll find on YouTube other than EliteProspects.

Just adding that while I didn't always agree, it was interesting to get another opinion and sometimes have a name come up that I had never considered, leading to my own deeper dive to view someone. There aren't enough people who try to go their own way with what they are looking for in players. It's a bit like how we fans don't like the canned responses players give in media scrums yet at the same time decry anyone who makes a comment that isn't one of those canned answers, only applied to scouting. Hope wherever he lands or whatever he does brings him joy.

Good for him for recognizing this just isn't his thing.

His rankings have been laughably bad. It's one thing to go out on a limb for certain players, but if you do it very often and are consistently wrong no one should take your views seriously.

Having said this he's definitely passionate and puts in effort at what he puts his mind to, so I'm sure he'll be successful in whatever his next endeavor is.

His WHL numbers are pretty bad though?

Dallas gets the same level of performance from a #179 selection.. and this guy is supposed to be a top five pick of the draft? Come on..

The dude was playing mens league and sucked, so he went to a lesser mens league and sucked, now he is playing against 16 year old kids and doing average.

Why are people thinking that is something amazing?

As for Scouch, I enjoyed his videos and content that's too bad.
