Will Ovechkin hit 20 goals this season?

The definition of a good team captain is a guy who lifts his team up and puts team success before personnal accomplishments.

Ovechkin is a new breed of captain.

Bringing his team down by hogging quality ice time, barely being able to skate and letting teammates do all the hard work while he waits with his skate firmly planted to telegraph a shot.

He looks completely cooked. He'll be hard pressed to reach 20 and next season will be even worse. If he gets the Gretzky record, it will be at the expense of the Capitals' success because he requires too much maintenance from line mates.

yea, maybe they should change the 8 guys he plays every powerplay with.
Must be all of them holding the Great 8 back.

Well, with all due respect to them, they mostly suck lol. The only two players worth anything on the 2 PP waves are Strome and Wilson. Everyone else is useless.

Is this meant to be a jinx thread?
Slow start but I'd be shocked if he doesn't hit 20

you don't give a forward whos pushing 40, 23 minutes of ice time, no matter who he is
heck, why would anyone give a winger 23 minutes to begin with...
- if he is not a superstar at his prime

drop his ice time at 15 - 17 minutes, then maybe you can get results out of him
make him play easier situations

his ice time tonight was just too high

Obviously way lower stakes than the all-time goal record, but I remember keeping tabs on Henrik Sedin’s all-time assists ranking and thinking for years he’d be a lock for working a good ways into the top 20. He finished 27.

All I’m saying is that a player can just run out of time. Ovechkin still has a decent shot at getting the record. And I think he might be the GOAT for longevity even if he is done now (his post-age 30 goal scoring is something the league just hasn’t ever seen before). But it still might not come to pass.

Take the Ovy name away and imagine predicting a 35 goal/season average for any player in their aged 38 and 39 seasons. It’s bananas. But if anyone could make it happen…

I haven't watched a single Capitals game, can anyone comment on how he looks?
I watch him against the Isles and Flames, completely whiffed on his patented one-timers 3 or 4 times, looked old and slow and looked to need oxygen when he finally made it to the bench, father time is creeping upon him fast.

I certainly hope not. I wish quick return to motherland, so we don't need to actively avoid reading articles of him in nhl.com etc anymore

he keeps passing in prime shooting spots for some reason (twice last night), some of it is the team is not great, some of it is just Ovi being old and honestly a bit unlucky in this stretch. Goal scorers have a little bit of odd/lucky bounces/right spot right time to their game and the stuff that normally goes in for Ovi just hasnt this season. I doubt he gets in the upper 30s but I would hope this bad streak has a lucky streak to counteract it at some point this season.

As a player he is clearly cooked. I wouldn’t be surprised if he can turn it around for goals but I agree here. Breaking 99’s record will most likely take more games than it took him as well as 3,000 more shots. Had 99 and 66 both had full health the record would be at over 1000 goals for either and no discussion here. I think it’s cool even as a pens fan to see the only reachable 99 record being hunted. There is no question though as a player he’s looked abysmal.

The only way he doesn’t hit at least 30 goals is if he gets injured for a significant period of time. Which, while possible especially given his age, has never happened to him before. So I wouldn’t bank on it now. Also, his current shooting percentage is due to normalize. He’s more likely to score 40+ goals than he is to miss 20.

I'm amazed he didn't break his slump last night. Seemed like for years he could score at will vs the Panthers.
