Will Fucale be the next World Junior Fleury?

The adults, you know cause they're 18 years old, right. Always get hyped up at the World Juniors, some make it, some don't. It's a hockey game, that's life.

Not quite sure why the Habs wasted a first round pick on Fucale.

He seems like a very nice kid and all, but his backup on the 2012-13 Mooseheads, Chris Clarke (who went 13-1-1) is now the backup goalie for Queens University.

They didn't waste a 1st rd pick on him.. He went in the 2nd rd.

Though it wasn't a shot that rebounded in. Fleury came out to play the puck and he hit his dman with the clear and it bounced back and hopped over his outstretched arm into the net. About as bad as luck gets, really.

It was a bonehead play. If he missed the defenceman it was heading directly to another American (9).

Easy clear to the half wall or corner and its in safe territory.

Remember that Leaf Draft pick from 2007 World Juniors team, yeah I don't. That's Fucale and most Canadian goaltenders since then.

If you're talking about Pogge that was 2006.

And yes I do remember a Leafs draft pick from 2006 World Juniors, His name is Tuukka Rask. He's pretty good. Some of these guys world juniors stars do work out. Dammit Leafs :(

If Fucale becomes as good as Fleury, I will be more than ecstatic to have a Price/Fucale duo for years to come.

In Montréal, good goalies become great.

It took years for Fleury to become really good. Even in his early 20's, closing in on his mid 20's he was questioned for some poor performances. It took him years to become the super solid player he is today.

Not a big Fucale fan. Doubt he'll ever be an NHL starter and i think he's been gifted fantastic teams. What can i say though besides after the teams horrible 2nd period he came out calm in the 3rd, made the saves he had too and helped win us a gold medal so props to him for that.

It was quite a similar situation for both goalies in this game. Sorokin kept the Russians in late and Fucale came up big late when he needed to be.

Both goalies were feeling the pressure tonight in the first couple periods IMO.

Yeah, pressure from odd man rushes and pucks being booted into their net by "back-checking" forwards, lol. That's how the Russians got back in the game, and what Canada also enjoyed on occasion in the other end. These defenses left some relatively frequent choice scoring opportunities in between the stretches of grind. Difference was a committee of kids stepping up at the right times and finishing.

People in Canada often say "We don't need him to be great, we just need him to be good". Fucale was good and didn't throw away the game for Canada. Gold medal. 'nuff said.

As is being discussed in another thread, you can get famous Grant Fuhr-ing a team to greatness. Getting hung out to dry on back-to-back 2-on-1s and having another booted past you by a teammate in a scramble could have made that final stretch a lot harder on a goalie without Fucale's composure/attitude.

They didn't, he was a 2nd round pick. And it wasn't wasted, the kid's gonna be good. He's not as bad as the OP keeps saying over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over ...

Doesn't look like an NHL goalie... can maybe eek out a career as a backup. He looks and plays terrified in net.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Fucale bent, but he didn't break and was there when we needed him. Not a great performance by him, but in the end, he got the job done and we won gold. Long term, he has some work that needs to be done. We have a good goalie coach in the Canadiens organization, so we'll see if he can turn him into something or not...Frankly I don't think Comrie would have done better, but I obviously don't know that for a fact.

What happened to all our great goalies in Canada? The last goalie to really dominate was Carey Price...
