Hi all,

I have seen a lot of people bidding on NHL jerseys worn and signes by players, like last week on the Indigenous Celebration Game jerseys of the leafs. Will these increase in value over the years?

Cheers!

It really depends a lot on whose jersey it is and what the situation was in which it was worn. If It's a top star it could very well go up depending on what you pay in the first place. But if it is just another player it will not.

There are lots of sites where you can find autographed jerseys. It's harder to get a handle on game worn stuff.

There is a prominent retailer selling game used jerseys of Ryan Reeves for $2499. My guess is that 15 years from now you won't get your money back. But if you owned an authentic Game worn jersey signed by Gretzky that you bought in 1984, my guess is that you have made a lot.

Also assuming of course it has its authentication accompanying any said jersey.

Thanks for the information. Lets say Michael Bunting Worn and Signed by the leafs and this jersey: Leafs fans are bidding thousands of dollars for Indigenous Celebration Game jerseys | Offside went for 5000 CAD. Will that increase you think? It is authentic and worn in warmup and signed.
It will decrease. I highly doubt people would fight for a Bunting jersey in 10-15 years. Second he only wore it in a warmup.

The only way I see it increasing is if they win the cup

depends on the jersey and who wore and how many jerseys are available

Example

A well known player changed his jersey 5 or 6 times in his last game. kept the last one and the other ones were donated and auctioned off---

but if it is a no name player? only die hard fans would want it

My .02 on these specific jerseys fetching big dollars is because they are pretty awesome.

But like others have pointed out, probably similar investment to trading cards: If you saved a 3rd liners rookie card from '82-83 for 40 years hoping it would make you rich, it's worth what, $25 today compared to the Gretzky cards that can go for thousands.

These won't increase in value unless the player that worn it becomes a superstar (and isn't one already).

The future value of these is already more than "priced-in". If people thought it would be more valuable in the future, then that would raise the current price to that future value. That goes for everything in life pretty much. You have to find things that people DONT think will increase in value, while you think they will increase in value for some reason that very few other people or only you know.

Generally game used merch appreciates much less than things like cards. Always found that weird, but it is what it is with such a niche market for game used stuff.

Unless you wanna play an expensive lottery ticket on a some rookie it's doubtful it will increase, and there you're taking an expensive gamble.

The stars/superstars might hold par with inflation, but everyone else will decrease over time. If you're buying a jersey like that, it's because you want it -- for yourself or a close friend/family member.

It's not an investment.

Those weren't worn in an actual game and Bunting isn't a star so the main source of its value is the one-off indigenous design, which could be valuable if a specific person really wanted that rare design. Otherwise, probably not.

Not likely, especially if he leaves Toronto.

A random players stuff can increase if they go from a lower team to a more popular team. That's pretty much it aside from them spontaneously becoming a star.

Players wear so many jerseys now, so I don't know how much they will appreciate, just becaue of the sheer amount of them. back in the day they would only wear one or two a year for home and away, now its at least three each of the main sets, plus there are thirds, reverse retros, retros, one-offs, special warm ups, and more if they make the playoffs.
On the other hand, I hear the made in Canada Adidas jerseys are $400 retail to begin with, so if you pay less than that for a gamer you're actually getting a deal.
10-15 years ago you could snag gamers off EBay for $120 with shipping. I miss those days.

Game used merch takes up lots of space, which limits the market for it. Also cards don't generally hold much long term value, unless it's a huge star. For example, Mike Bossy or Marcel Dionne Rookies can be had for relatively cheap. The value of players like Getzlaf eventually falls off a cliff, once they stop performing at the top level.

Thanks for all the replies, very helpfull. I bid on it and I won (and so need to pay also if I do not want to, the auction is saying that I cannot retract the bid, not sure if I wont pay what will happen).

I love the jersey as it is a one of a kind and Bunting has a good season but it is a lot of money and therefore I was also wondering if it could be an investment for over the next 25 years if I ever wanted to sell again.
