AHL: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins: '24-'25 The Players Sully Hates

Yes, it's happening! The WB/S Penguins are making their moves to contend for the Calder Cup!

(In reality, I'm expecting it to come out that Larsson or Blomqvist is hurt).
Does the NHL to AHL rules about the roster at the TDL being playoff eligible the same for ECHL to AHL? If so, thats probably what this is, just in case of a goalie move.

I don't know, but if that's all it was, they wouldn't need to make that move today. They could have done it on Friday (or whenever the AHL's roster deadline is; it isn't always on the same day as the NHL trade deadline, as I recall).

The Murashov move accomplishes two things --

Wheeling doesn't play until Friday night. If the Penguins make a move that includes a goaltender at the NHL or AHL level, they have flexibility now. WBS can carry three goalies for a week just fine.

I believe players have to be on the AHL roster at the NHL trade deadline to be eligible for the AHL playoffs. So, you may see Bemstrom get sent back down as a paper transaction, too.

At least the last 2 years the AHL playoff roster deadline was the same date and time as the NHL trade deadline. No luck finding anything concrete if that's always the case.

It makes the most sense to have it synced up so that both leagues stabilize any potential player movement at the same time.

Sebastian Aho is back for WBS. If he's healthy, he could help them shore things up for a Calder Cup run. Larsson with the start and Mursahov backing him up.

Haase noted something about Bemstrom - "It would be nice if Bemstrom would find a way to shoot a fraction more. This is a guy who was regularly getting 6-8 shots a night in the AHL as the season went on, and he's had one a game every game this season. Obviously, the NHL is a giant leap up, and you can't expect him to replicate his AHL success up here. But the drop-off isn't always quite so steep."

So I went back to look at Bemstrom's NHL history.

He's never averaged two shots or more per game at the NHL level. It's between 1-2 shots. Doesn't matter his ice time. Doesn't matter his usage. Even his rookie year, when he had 10+10 in 56 games, he was less than two shots per game.

Looks like a classic case of a guy who has time and space to shoot frequently at the AHL level but not at the NHL level.

A large factor is the PP. He's relied heavily on PP goals at lower levels, but doesn't get even 2nd unit time, that I can recall, here.

Same issue as Puustinen…

And that's why it's important for most prospects to be able to do other things and contribute in other ways. Should Bemstrom be on PP2 on this particular Pens team? Yeah, probably. Especially after the deadline.

But these were the forwards who had more than a cameo appearance on the PP last night - Crosby, Malkin, Rakell, Rust, Tomasino (team high 2:16!), Hayes, and Beauvillier.

If it's Koivunen or Broz or McGroarty, you find a way to get them in there. I'm not really upset about Bemstrom or Puustinen or some others not getting that chance ahead of those guys.
I think Bemstrom has a similar problem to Puustinen, maybe not the same exact issue (Puustinen has a slow release that doesn't cut it in the NHL) but a general issue of being able to play at NHL speeds to be able to produce in the NHL.
Exactly. I think the same for Puljujarvi, by the way, despite his pedigree. And I wonder long-term about DOC, too. We'll see how he does and how that contract ages in Vancouver.

DOC can skate, forecheck, PK and play centre in a pinch. Always be a spot for guys like that on a 4th line.

The second his legs disappear, though, he's in danger. I think his offensive inconsistency is between the ears, and if he can't use his physical traits to make up for mistakes, he's cooked.

Or could be coaching .... A coach that coaches all of the offense out of these young guys, turning them all into plugs like Accari, Nieto... and sully......

I mean yeah but you could say that about most bottom 6 players. DOC is 26 and will be 27 when his contract starts. Barrring injury I'd expect him to have at least 5/6s of solid NHL play.
