That's me in the corner
Interesting little article dropping today, right before Davidson’s expected presser tomorrow.

Guessing the media relations staff gave The Athletic a little preview, on background since there are no direct quotes, of what direction Davidson is going to lay out. The definitive language in some of these lines stands out, compared to how the headline is written.
Rantanen and Mitch Marner are very much on Davidson’s radar. Failing that, there’s possibly Nikolaj Ehlers, Brock Boeser and Brock Nelson. Brad Marchandand John Tavares don’t fit the timeline very well, but Davidson might be feeling some heat for the first time, and anything could be on the table.

Davidson will be more aggressive in his pursuit of that high-end type of player come July. He’s gotten a good look at how far the Blackhawks still are from being a competitive team, despite last season’s offseason additions, and has to see the Blackhawks need a major upgrade while the prospects develop, particularly among his forward group.

Iffy on Rants at $14m. Not sure about Marner at that cap either.

Although the cap is expected to rise and there aren't many forwards who are looking at big term outside of Bedard.

A lot of skilled D, but because the position is generally a lot less noticeable than forward, usually D don't cost as much to sign.

So the money might be there to make a move like this.

Unfortunately it just isn't the time to go big game hunting.

Hawks are in no position to give anyone $10M+ contracts in the offseaon.
same team that tried to trade an unprotected 1st and the pick will likely be top 2...they're in no mans land with their plan right now, likely feeling some pressure from Danny to improve the team, potentially even a little worried Bedard gets sick of the losing even if its the right thing to do

Of the players mentioned above, for me Tavares stands out. I think he can be had for cheap. Yes, he is a bit long in the tooth, but he is a fitness nut and is a great role model for young players. He is also consistently 55% or better at the dot.
I would love to have Marner, the most creative player in the NHL, IMO, but he is very expensive.
Of course there is always the question of players not wanting to come to this org.......

I've said this a few times already as I know the team is bad. But with an intriguing young core, prospects coming up, draft capital up the wazoo, plenty of cap space, original six heritage, and a city like Chicago, I'm curious how free agents view signing here.

I know Davidson went after Guentzel hard and lost out to Tampa but I wonder how many other free agents Davidson has lost out on that he really wanted. I have a feeling that despite their record, the Blackhawks are still a destination as he signed Bertuzzi and Teravainen to deals reflecting their market value. So given that we will be another year into the rebuild and all of the other factors I mentioned above, I am very intrigued by what Davidson does this summer and the players that choose to come here.

I just dont think Rantanen or Marner are going to be available. Im not very interested in overpaying much of that second tier of Boeser Tavares Marchand or Ehlers

Zucker and Nelson would be my favorites for big overpays. Nelson may need a substantial overpay.

They mentioned offersheets but our draft picks are too high to do that. Dallas would have to match anything for Wyatt Johnston.

Maybe Svechnikov becomes available for trade if Carolina becomes tight against the cap? It also doesnt seem like its impossible for Pettersson to be had. Davidson would have to get creative in a three teamer.

Go get David Carle

If they are going big game hunting, Marner for me. While I think Rantanen is a better player, I feel like he is going to have a massive fall off in his early 30s. Guys with that big of a body dont age well and I feel like the back half of his 8 year deal has a chance to look real ugly. Marner has the type of game and body that will allow him to continue playing at an elite level for the duration of an 8 year contract.
