Impatience.

He was viewed no differently than Schenn (many vocal critics and supporters). It doesn't help that HFBoards has this insidious obsession with draft picks and 19 year olds, where all prospects are held up against unrealistic benchmarks like Eberle and Skinner.

edit: Why would racism even come up? I guess some people need to see something sinister in every shadow. Do people not realize that fully half the population of Toronto wasn't even born in this country?

And it's been like that for decades.

Why the implication? You said it best, "I guess some people need [and want] to see something sinister in every shadow."

That's precisely the case. And then when players are brought up from GR, it's typically to play on the 3rd and 4th lines, until they are familiar enough with the defensive requirements necessary to play Red Wings hockey.

Successful clubs impose stages of development as the norm, precisely because that is the norm for an NHL professional. Rare is the player who is instantly prolific.

Hopefully Kadri's combination of AHL experience, renewed dedication to his fitness and nutrition equates to permanent position with the big club. But rightly so, it's ready when it's ready.

Well said. Seems we are on the same page.

There's no timeline for when a prospect should be making the lineup versus when it's considered the time to label him a bust.

Each prospect, and young player, is different.

What we should all agree on in regards to the Detroit system, is that being patient, and in certain cases, overly patient with young players, is never going to hurt that player. It can only help them.

Rushing a player in and putting too much on his shoulders, can most definitely hurt a player though - see Luke Schenn.

That's why I've been thrilled with Reilly not getting rushed in here (he will play for the Leafs/Marlies in March). Don't rush your prospects; be patient with them, let them learn, and for god sakes protect them - this is a ruthless market.

Number 1 reason for me... RON WILSON. The man put lofty expectations on Naz and also threw him under the bus in multiple occasions.

1. Cutting Naz even though he was one of the best players in camp (should have gave him a few games)
2. Telling media he wants Naz to be a 100 point player in the NHL
3. Constantly scrutinizing his play, while other players on his team got a pass
4. Not defending him enough in the media, against the media, or managing the expectations placed on him by the media

Randy has handled his young players much better, he's put them in a position to succeed, he's managed the expectations placed on his young players, and he's been constructively critical of every player on the team, not just Naz.

Naz wasn't ready when he came to his first few camps, but at the same time it should have been handled more gently than the way Ron handled it.

The idea of switching to wing was far from asinine and many would say we have been very patient with him actually and developing his overall game in the AHL.

Uh, no the Leafs haven't been patient with him at all. He should have been given more of a longer chance with the big club previously. He's been up and down like a yo-yo and crapped on by the organization through the media.

Hence why we need someone like Cherry. Someone who will fight for the kid. So far though Carlyle seems pretty fond of Kadri and his work ethic. Kid is an ox:yo:

I've been saying this for so long it hurts. Philadelphia (another of the top developers of forwards) does the same, giving most of them (not all) a few years and then starting them on the 3rd line.

What happened to him showing up to camp in "unacceptable condition". I thought he was fat.

Hodgson scored

That was the brilliance of Dallas Eakins. Then after calling out Kadri for being fat he whined the media made a big deal out of his comments. Does he think he's coaching in Phoenix?

I think he's shutting the critics up right now. He looks fantastic right now.

Now it's been only one game and a period but he's shown some very strong play

you can always trace how a player is treated by the fans to what the media says/implies about them. that's all I have to say about this.

I think there's a good amount of excitement about what he can do this year.

Want to like his game but cannot. He reminds me of Robbie Schremp and not in a good way. Has good instincts offensively and will probably get better but plays a lazy perimeter game and is still far to weak along the boards and defensively.

I'm not sold. I'm glad he's in the NHL and is getting a chance but I can't imagine him being on the first line for some reason.

Rob Schremp was lazy, Kadri is not lazy, lmao

Schremp wouldn't play defense if his mother's life depended on it

You're clearly not watching the games he's playing in. He's far from lazy, he back checks, and is responsible in his own end while providing great offence when he has the puck. Next game watch Kadri for a **** or two, just focus on him and you'll see what I'm talking about. I'm not sure where you get the laziness from.

Kadri needs to be on 1st PP at least, if I see another pass from kessel to Phaneuf where its obvious they are just looking for a lane to shoot I'm gonna go crazy. Kadri knows where the net is, where to go to get the puck, who to pass it to in order to open a lane. Its a breath of fresh air.

Exactly what I saw as well. First period one of the D-men make a mistake and kadri was there to pick up for the mistake.

3rd period he lifts someone's stick and almost regains possession for us. He may not be Toews, but its nice knowing that he's improved in that area of his game.

Another powerplay goal, and he was a bit better on faceoffs tonight. He's looking more like a real player than he has in the past, that's for sure. It's just a matter of whether he keeps it up or if he rests on his laurels like he has in the past.

As someone who has criticized Kadri in the past, I find the insinuation that people don't appreciate his talent because of his ethnic background to be insulting. Those with small minds look to that as the only explanation they can come up with, while overlooking more obvious factors like the "I'm entitled to this" attitude he's had since being drafted. I don't remember Schenn or Reilly acting like god's gift to hockey and expecting a job to be given to them, perhaps that is why Kadri is not embraced as much. I know it's one big reason why I didn't like him. The race thing is just stupid.

He has been our best player (along with Kessel) these two games. He still has to improve, but there is so much potential there. I love his offensive IQ and creativity with the puck. No one else on the team has that.

Have you heard him in interviews recently. He doesn't act as cocky as he did when he was 17 anymore. He's grown up.
