What was I saying earlier about Leafs fans being amongst the worst in pro sports?

They don't have any justifiable reason to hate on the kid, but they do so anyway.

The majority of the things this fan base says or does are completely baseless and without justification or reason.

You get used to it quickly. It's half the reason "leafs nation" is the bunt of many jokes across the country

It all started off when a local boy was drafted with high expectations. The leafs fans were anxious to see him play for the big club. Then one day he got his big chance and did pretty well, but big bad Wilson said little Kadri was to small and so he could not play wit the big boys. Many people in the town disagreed with big bad Wilson's decision and the media picked up on this, the media exploited the attention little Kadri garnered and kept reigniting the debate for years until...they got little Morgan Riley and noticed little Kadri got less attention than before and was ready to play, now that big bad Wilson wa fired with pay.

The end

I think the biggest reason for the flack Kadri's been getting has to do with organizational depth, and fans setting unreasonable expectations / hopes from him.

Around the time Schenn entered the league, we had rough and tumble stay at home defenders in Exelby, Komisarek, Finger, Beauchamin, and later Aulie.

At the time Rielly was drafted, we had plenty of puck moving offensive PMD in Liles, Phaneuf, Gardiner, Franson, and even Gunnarsson.

With Kadri, though, it was basically a graveyard of centers highlighted by a 25 year old (and not very productive at the time) Grabovski, Mitchell, Wallin, Boyce, Brent, and Bozak (a free wallet with big question marks). He was drafted as a center, yet he was nearly instantly converted to a winger, a position we didn't really need as badly, with no sign of the team intending to develop him as a center.

This is his year. Probably a year late due to his injury in last years camp. 1st game was impressive, hits, scores, some nice defensive plays. His line was always a threat. Only needs to improve face offs from that game, but apparently was fine in that regard in camp. I like his attitude, wants to be the guy. Let him try. Results look good so far.

He looks like a different player since I last seen him play. The AHL seems to have done him some good.Maybe this is why the Leafs developed him slowly.I truely doubt it had anything to do with his heritage.

But I give him 10 games to show his real self - after the adrenalin wears off a bit.

Maybe some of the posters are not actually Leafs fans.Could be here in the Leafs forum to mess with everybody's heads.

High picks for any team are expected to be great right from the start, every team, every fan expects this, but young guys take time unless they are #1 picks. Give them a couple years and usualy they turn out ok.

Just to go along with the rest of the people in this thread.

Probably racist westerner Leaf fans having the biggest mouth when it come to being his critic.

Because its the fun thing to do.

I really hope he does well this year.

I really hope he does really well for his entire career.

I think we all should just shut the hell up and let him play.

we expected he'd be a regular contributing nhler sooner than this. plus, he comes across quite arrogant sometimes.

rightly or wrongly, those are the reasons some might not like him much.

that said, i think the "hate" for kadri is highly exaggerated. we'd all like to see him become a first line, all-star, stanley cup-winning hall of famer.

I think we all should just shut the hell up and let him play.

I'm pretty sure people on forums don't influence it one way or the other... it's the media personalities that need to "shut the hell up and let him play". As well as certain people throughout the Leafs organization over the years.

If Kadri gets criticized or praised on HFBoards, it makes 0 difference to his play.

Insert haters gonna hate gif here.

Insert waterfall chart of declining intelligence for the above...

"Haters gonna hate"...Correct. I despise idiocy. If you think opposition to your characterization is somehow indivisible from "hate", actually demonstrate it from what I posted as opposed to appealing to ignorant cheerleading.

This is exactly what OP is talking about. You just trash him with all those things that are completely unwarranted.

-What has he done to earn the reputation of being selfish?
-Have you seen his defensive game with the Marlies and how much it has improved?
-Why don't you trash 90% of the offensively gifted kids that come into the NHL with flawed defensive games?

Facts:
-He's not small, he's average NHL size for his position, 6'0 and 185 lbs.
-He's much stronger on the puck than he used to be when he first came up, again like most rookies who have to adjust from playing against kids to playing against men.
-He is grittier than most players on the Leafs, and isn't afraid to throw the body. He had 4 hits in under 10 minutes of play against Montreal. If a player averages 4 hits per game, he likely leads the NHL in hits.

The problem is, you and many posters like you have these ignorant stubborn impressions that you refuse to adjust. If a guy happens to do something bad in the one game you pay attention, you will always point to that one bad example. Go take a look at how NHL prospects develop, it's a miracle Kadri is where he is today with all the negativity he's received.

You don't see this on any other team's forum, no other team has so many guys who continuously trash their best offensive prospect. Even guys with flaws are defended, to the point of blind homerism by their fans, except Kadri. Go to the Habs board and ask them why Lois Leblanc is where he is. Or to the Oilers board about MPS. Or to the Flyers board about Brayden Schenn. Or to the Islanders board about Neiderreiter. I could go on and on with examples. None of these guys are busts yet. And they will all support and defend their guys and tell you so.

I just can't wait until you and all the haters continue to eat crow.

Good post.

To be honest, I think posters like the one you were responding to, behave in that manner because they associate pessimism with 'real hockey intelligence'. You know, something other teams fans rag on the Maple Leafs for because it's the fun thing to do.

So in turn some Leaf fans clutch on to unwarranted claims about Leaf players and prospects to show everyone else who admittedly hate the Leafs "Hey, look at me. I get it, I see our players have all the flaws you all say and that makes me smart. I'm a realist. I have hockey intelligence!".

Which is hilarious at times when we see how far off track things get. Kadri's is weak? lazy? and selfish?

Maybe he's not as strong as everyone else because he's a kid playing against men right now - just like 90% of all prospects. But lazy? Selfish? I've yet to see it. He's developing right before our eyes and seems to be improving every time we see him.

Based on his play...

We should hate more of our prospects.Dang you Reilly, you aren't,ummm, you didnt, aghhh, why didnt you make the team at 18!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate you now.

Who knows but we have always had an undue love affair with our firsts giving them instant star status. How did that work out? Why worry about it,he is in the NHL in the good hands of MR. Carlyle. He plays 9 minutes and scores and people get upset about that.

Poor Kadri, some people, who probably aren't leafs fans, just seem to hate him so much. It's unfair and it's not right.:sarcasm::shakehead

It's okay to like a player and yet have some worries about his game without "hating" the guy. He's getting this shot his year so we can all relax a little and let the hockey do the talking. Enough of this "woe is me", and everyone who thinks like me, attitude.

Well hate happens to all players, there were some posts after the Habs game after Dion logged over 27mins, that he looked slow, was awful after a 2-1 win. You are not going to please all Leafs fans.

Lol this. If fans can somehow hate our ppg winger it not surprising they can hate our best forward prospect.

Yep, I'll never understand how a top five scorer in the league, who is 25 years old, could get pissed on as much as he does. Insanity. This is why we can't have nice things.

As for Kadri, I've tried and tried to figure out why media and fans give him so much grief, but have yet to discover any good reason. It does bode the question; would Brayden Schenn be given the same treatment had he been drafted by Toronto in 2009. As crappy as it is to think, race and descrimination may have some underlying factor.

I think that's the truest thing you've posted here and in truth where any criticism for one player or another stops in Leafs Nation.

It's a hypervigilant, hypercritical fan-base starving for success where a player is a saviour one night and a scapegoat the next.

Exampling Kadri as a player who when he's received criticism as something disproportionate to say...every goalie the Leafs have had since Ed Belfour, or every center the club has iced since Sundin, or every prospect selected since Wendel Clark, or every deal made since Kurvers was acquired, obscures the at times harsh reality for any player (See Matt Stajan) who does not explode onto the scene with game changing effect.

If people are going to continue that Kadri has been victimized, then the same people better quickly defend those in the media (Don Cherry, etc) and those here who, while part of Leafs Nation and who also characterize our fanbase, have been consistent in their defence of him.

And while it's convenient to cite other fanbases on a one for one sampling, it does nothing to equate the unparalleled support the Toronto Maple Leafs enjoy because of it's dedicated, sometimes myopic fans.

And if the "haters" of Leafs Nation who call themselves Leafs fans can't see the forest from the trees, than perhaps Carolina or Phoenix could use your player above team and fan base support.

It's the NHL, it's the Toronto Maple Leafs, love it or leave it, but "you" are not going to highjack it's name, it's great fans and it's good future to come because of some perceived political slight that is entirely contrived and delusional given the kind of support the player has actually had the priviledge to enjoy.

Personally I'm not opposed to a piercing discussion where merit demands it, but it's frivolous and indulgent to steer this player and his experience into areas that have actually endured true prejudice.

The implication here against Leafs Nation disgusts me. That's what I "hate" and every self-respecting Leafs fan should too.

If the 1st game was any indication it looks like this is one Prospect that was handled very well.

There have been many, many Kadri threads and I see as him being a very polarizing player when it comes to posters. There are just as many Kadri lover's on here as haters.
Anytime a player is hyped and defended as much as he has, a backlash is inevitable.

Winning trumps all. This team didn't not win in a long time so every little flaw, even fictional, will be scrutinized. Some like him, some don't, who cares. I don't, so I will never buy his shirt. I don't lose sleep over it, I am sure as heck he doesn't either. There is no denying he has talent, he matured. I hope he will be consistent. With all this said, I truly think he should get minutes on the top line, because he is sure as heck is better than Bozak.
