Every player you can point to something positive, but I’m hard pressed to find one on ice attractive trait right now for Thornton. He literally looks a complete liability within this playoff pace, the heightened play of Spezza and decent contribution from Simmonds, only masking just how awful he truly looks. I hope I eat my words next game, but as it stands,he has no business suiting up. So just curious for any fans of Joe, what is he bringing to the table, why is he in the lineup?

He's hitting and trying but my fear from the regular season seems to be coming true, he just doesn't have the speed, especially for the playoff intensity and how fast things pick up.

Hopefully he puts it together, but if I'm being honest, i think that 4th line would be playing better with him out and Brooks in.

I feel Jumbo holds Spezza back sometimes and Brooks is that exciting speedy dude that could get Spezza really going.

It’s the way he’s getting owned on the walls too now that’s concerning. I mean the speed is a liability, but watching a big body lose countless board battles is a deal breaker for me.

Loyalty and respect for what he has done in the league. And he has a bite to his game this team needs on a regular basis

He's playing physical and hard. Keeping the Habs on their toes.
But it’s always the Hab that comes out with the puck it seems. That’s where I don’t get it, coming in hard is fine, but all that matters is who wins the puck and it usually isn’t him.

He will back in for Game 3, and I’ll be the first to cheer if does something positive.

Feels like Keefe thinks he is a safe option, which is interesting.

He is finishing checks and clearing the zone well/winning battles. He's one of the few wingers we have that can simply out battle the Habs D.

With that said, were a better team without him IMO.

On the broadcast last night they mentioned that Jumbo was hanging out with Sandin after practice the other night advising him, mentally helping him, getting him ready for the upcoming game. In additiona to trying his best on the ice, it seems like Jumbo is trying to get guys emotionally engaged and prepared the right way, which is important for playoff games where the stakes are higher and the pressure could be unnerving for certain guys (especially the inexperienced or ones with anxiety).

When Jumbo was with the Sharks he helped create an atmosphere that was conducive to winning and overcoming adversity. He was the guy who when stressed, he would just take his shirt off. Now during interviews, our captain Couture often does them shirtless! And Joe introduced Burns to massive, overgrown beards and beard care products. Look great, play great right?! And I'm sure you've heard the stories about Joe, illusive four-goal-games, and taking and his rooster out and ******* it to celebrate!!!!

P.S. Go Manny Malhotra too! Go Leafs!

I honestly believe he was given some sort of guarantee he'd be in the lineup when they signed him for so little.

Threw 4 hits last night and had no outstanding errors. Everyone knows his true value likely comes from his presence/voice on the bench and in the room. But I thought he was much better last night than in game 1. Spezza and Simmonds really picked it up a gear last night which was amazing to see. The issue with benching such a high profile player like Thornton, is with our big contracts, we rely on selling guys on the idea of taking a discount to play for their hometown team. You don't get guys like Spezza and Simmonds if they're worried about signing for less to get benched. The boys seem to like having Jumbo around, which counts for something when it comes to team morale

He’s playing hard. He also brings a lot of veteran experience and leadership on and off the ice. I do agree we’d be better with someone like Brooks or even Anderson on the fourth line instead given their speed but if we can limit Thornton’s ice time to 10 minutes or so, that shouldn’t really make or break any series given all the talent we have on this roster. It also allows us to double shift or let guys like Matthews, Marner and Nylander to stay out on the ice a little longer.

Hopefully for Thornton’s sake and legacy he decides to hang up his skates this off-season. Hire him in a player development role to keep him in the organization but every great career comes to an end and he’s at that point…

Yep. 100% agree, watching that big body give up pucks constantly on the boards is getting on my nerves, honestly Simmonds is good for the toughness and such but the play dies on his stick so often in the offensive zone its hard to watch sometimes as well.

This whole fan base cried about wanting ppl like Jumbo and now we wanna throw him aside. How not to get free agents in the future 101.

plus you guys dunno what he does on the bench, all the little intangibles.

Also imagine nitpicking the 12th forward on a team. Name one team without a deficiency. This fan base is nauseating
