Why is there always a man who sits inside the penalty box?

When I watch games, I notice there is always a man, usually old, who sits in the penalty box with the penalized player. What does he record on his clipboard? If he's recording details about the player that got penalized, wouldn't that be pretty redundant, as we live in a digital world where all the details get posted online as soon as an event happens? Like if we can follow the game via box score or play-by-play stats provided by the official NHL website, then what purpose does he have sitting there?

What do you think?

I’ve sat behind the penalty box. I was surprised to see them logging exact times of start and end of penalties and (it appeared) time outs.

They also had some bigass cups of Tim Hortons stashed behind the boards.

They keep the players company and cheer them up if they feel too bad for taking a penalty.

It's likely part of the rules for them to keep a paper trail for scoring or in this case, logging penalties and such.

Most likely - scoreboards malfunction sometimes. Not sure how the official timekeeper does his job - but I'm guessing a combo of digital and physical.

No seriously how do you expect the player to get in if there is no one to open the door.

Would be funny seeing the outtakes of guys messing up those stupid button releases that are on the boards. But it definitely makes it easier for the ref to corral a guy into the box if they don't have to mess around opening it. Plus paper trail, plus good retirement job

They're mates of the team and get great free seats for games.

Plus they keep book on penalties for official sheet and open doors.

i'm surprised those guys haven't been phased out like the goal judges were

but then again like others have mentioned, who will open and close the door for the players? unless they create automatic penalty box doors, they're there to stay

... well for starters the doors can be opened from both sides.

You press down on that white part with the butt of your stick.

Yeah but can you imagine a guy skating backwards arguing with the ref/ player in a heated moment having to turn around and deal with those clunky buttons.

Just let grandpa Joe have his retirement job opening the door.

It should be a timer and that opens when the score keeper programs it too.

There should also be an automatic timer that unlocks it. When the door opens smoke bursts and stone cold music should play.
