I think NHL Players at a Winter Olympics that's held in Europe will give him a pretty big stage. While the Winter Olympics aren't as big as the Summer Olympics, Ice Hockey is still a premiere event (I'd say alongside Figure Skating) at the winter games. These last Olympics held in Europe received a lot of buzz on social media and dominating the news cycle. If the winter olympics are a good showing, it will improve McDavid's stature a lot.
They are bringing lacrosse to the 2028 olympics , will that put the best lacross player on the map worldwide?

Both of the points you made aren't even the reason nobody knows him :laugh:

Everybody keeps repeating these points but nobody knows Crosby or Ovi or PK Subban lmao , people don't even know the sport exists, how are you gonna blame McDavid for that
Ok then, calm down.

So no one knows the sport. Well, maybe then f***ing do something about it. Or stop complaining.

How could McDavid be popular? He would have to gain a massive following from something that has zero relevance to hockey and good luck with that with the personality of a wooden spoon.

People don't give a crap about hockey, unless they are fans of the sport.

It's actually still Gretzky. Most Americans can't name a hockey player outside of Gretzky.
And his daughter, Paulina, married to famous golfer Dustin Johnson and in sexy/racey photo shoots in various media, is maybe more popular
than Wayne, to some or most Americans now, especially those not following sports, as she's active and current whereas he hasn't played in years.

Not especially, there are no sparkling personalities in that group that I listed. There are certainly no brain surgeons there, James is a nice guy but quite immature, Brady is weird yet dull, Messi seems to have no discernible characteristics at all, and Ronaldo is a douche. Make them hockey stars and their personalities move the needle exactly 0.

Damn, I never thought of it this way but every word of that post is true.

It is because old hockey media spends all day just d*** riding the same franchises. Always taking small shots at southern markets. Like the Barstool tweets of photos of the panthers seats 1 min into the 2nd period when fans are still getting back to their seats. When you could see the same thing happens in any arena.

Or the crying about taxes now when they did not say shit for years.

Or when a Kevin Bieksa crys about Nick Cousins then defends Trouba.

These bias northern analysts need to be fired into the sun. They only hurt the growth game at this point.

It still boggles my mind how a business like the NHL can keep a team in Edmonton when you need to take a dog sled to get there.

Move them to Houston.
No no, you're doing it wrong.

If your aim is to cause a meltdown of epic proportion on that side of Alberta, one that could shut down HF for days, here's what you do: Move the team...

...to Quebec.

In light of the Johnny Gaudreau tragedy the one story about him that was so cute was the story of his dad putting Skittles candy on the ice for Johnny to learn how to skate.

How is it the Skittles marketing folks never had any interest in doing a marketing campaign around that?

Hockey players are just treated like lower than dirt by marketing agencies.

McDavid ... McDonalds (at least McDonalds Canada) ... like hello? That's another no brainer.

Hockey Agents just aren't trying or they want too much money for an endorsement, which I think may be the more accurate one.

If I was a hockey player I'd be all over my agent to get me any and all sponsorships or endorsements I could find. I can't get a Nike deal but I can get a deal for shoes sold at Walmart? Hell yeah I want that. Visibility brings in more money down the road, plan for tomorrow.

Plays in deadmonton, has the personality of a paper plate and a face for radio.

Next question.

Yeah because how many superstars in hockey are household marketing names in LA, Chicago, New York? Etc. Noooobody.

It's not a city/market problem, not when the most well known hockey player ever made most of his name in the same city back when it was 40% the size in the 80s.

It's a "the mainstream sports audience in the US does not give a f*** about a sport on ice" problem.

Does your sport involve skating? On ice, as in a winter sport? Yes? Then you're not going to be LeBron James, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, or even probably Caitlyn Clark in popularity.

Doesn't matter what your personality is, who you look like, where you play.

Next question.

Cause he's Canadian and plays in a city people haven't even heard of (sorry Edmonton peeps but it's true).

Why would the US media every hype up that?

If he was from Minnesota and was putting up these numbers for the Rangers he would be *way* more famous. Even as a Canadian if he was doing this in a big American market he would get more hype.

There's no money to be made nobody outside of hockey fans know these people and there's not alot of Hockey fans in the world . Not sure what you expect

It’s his market mostly…trade him to LA, NY…..etc…..we’d see that change quickly.

False , 75% of the worlds population don't even know what hockey is as a sport. Vast majority of people in the USA have no idea who Sidney Crosby is. Vast majority of people in the USA have never heard of Auston Matthews
