Why is Auston Matthews considered a top-ten, even top-five player already? Obviously he had an incredible rookie season, but having him rated above guys like Stamkos, Schiefele, etc is unjustified imo. I will name all the forwards I think are better than him.

(In no order)

McDavid
Stamkos
Kucherov
Crosby
Malkin
Ovechkin
Tarasenko
Tavares
Benn
Backstrom
Kane
Gaudreau
Schiefele
Wheeler

Just of the top of my head. In the future Matthews could pass most of these guys, but why is he already considered so great? Toronto Bias?

Who says Matthews is better than Stamkos or Kucherov?

Nobody does.

Seems the OP thinks McDavid has already been inducted into the hall of fame, while Matthews has to keep doing what he does for 20 years before anyone on TV can be excited about the young player and refer to him as one of the top players in the league.

I don't think McDavid is better than any of those players on that list either, because he hasn't played long enough.

But I'm pretty certain he will be as good or better than almost all those players, and I think Matthews will absolutely be in that mix too, but McDavid will probably be the best by quite a margin I'm sure. These guys are still pretty young only a couple years into the NHL.

40 goals 69 points in a rookie season is phenomenally dominant. he looked to be going for a 90 to 100 point season with 40+ goals till he smacked his head and now that hes back and healthy he looks like he could still crack 80. even after missing 8 games and clearly being off for another 5 or 6 he's still on pace for over 40.

had he not been concussed his goal pace would be around 50 with points around 90 and that's including the games he was playing concussed.

the only person who stands a shot on managing that combo of overall play and goal scoring on that list is kucherov and that includes your golden boy mcdavid.

you'll learn. it's a nice try on bashing him but you'll see him in Hart trophy talks in the coming years.

Kucherov is on another tier

But I think Matthews and Stamkos are on the same tier

I think you have to consider Stamkos the better player until Matthews finishes higher in the scoring race than he did last season (assuming Stamkos ends up in the top five or so).

Matthews did look like a beast this season before he started having health problems.

I am giving Matthews the benefit of the doubt from his 6 playoff games played against the Capitals

without his strong play there, I would give it to Stamkos

He leads the goals in Even Strength goals since he entered the league (4 ahead of Kucherov in the same amount of games played) and has the 5th best P1/60 of any player to play over 1000 minutes. He's 5th in total goals. He's earned his praise and has outplayed a bunch of people on your list during that time frame.

He's on pace for right around 50 goals and 90 points but your right never again.

I mean ovechkin put up 50 goals and 109 points when he missed 10 games but Matthews misses 8 games and he may be lucky to hit 80?
Why do people keep saying Matthews missed 8 games, I've seen it in multiple threads. He's missed 10.
