Why haven't the Panthers retired Bure's number?

Then you got your answer for this thread.

I already told you my rationale. Quality over quantity. At least Luongo had some dominant years for his position. Weiss was mediocre for pretty much his entire time here. His points just added up.

Olli Jokinen deserves it over Weiss

Beezer or Mellanby would be there before Bure. Though #1 should be the fist one we retire.

You mean the 1986 Venzina winner and one of Rangers all time greats aswell as leading Panthers to a Stanley Cup final where he had one of the greatest goalie matchups with the legend Roy? Who are you again?
That's not my response! It's the "make believe new players response" someone is the thread started

"Sorry (new player), but you can't wear number 10 here because Pavel Bure played here a little over three seasons."

His response: "WOW the Russian rocket?!?! He's a legend!!"

His Next response: "who the hell is mellenby, beezer, and skrudland?!"

This is what you wrote and i told you about Beezer. Do you even know NHL/Panthers history?

"Sorry (new player), but you can't wear number 10 here because Pavel Bure played here a little over three seasons."

It just doesn't make enough sense. He wasn't here long enough and is not uniquely tied to the Panthers brand. The Panthers only made the playoffs once while he was here and were ousted in four games.

He was an amazing player though.
^^
I was quoting this guy's hypothetical situation. Reading comprehension for the win. I loved beezer and mellenby.

But Beezer stock went way down after his racist tirade on Trevor daly.

we should retire harvey into the rafters and have it read harvi falkov, right next to torree.

We all know how good he was, but you don't retire a guy's jersey that only spent a few seasons here. And if I recall correctly, he didn't do much off the ice with the franchise.

That's simply not true. I know for a fact that he used to have his girlfriend bake cookies for the rest of the team. You can't put a price on that.

As good as Bure was, he wasn't here long enough to get his number retired by this team. He had two upper 50 goal scoring seasons here. The other two seasons did not reach those levels. You don't retire someone's number for that. I think he is one of the greatest goal scorers of all time and I loved watching him play. But he wasn't here long enough to get his number retired.

The first number (excluding Torrey's #93) retired by this franchise will set the tone for the future. If Bure, a guy who played here for 3.5 years is the example, where do you draw the line from there on?

Regardless of the player's stature, 3.5 years is nowhere even close to being worthy of hanging in the rafters. Next thing you know, we'll be retiring Jagr's number too..

If luongo spends 3 more quality years here but doesn't take us deep into the playoffs does he deserve to get his number up there?
Absolutely. I think he's going to retire around 2020, so that would put him at 11.5 seasons as a Panther. Leading all goaltender statistics available, face of the franchise, involved in the community, etc. There's no doubt #1 is going up there once his career is over.

It's obvious he did little off the ice. I meant his impact on our young fans and the local youth hockey programs. Kids here started playing because they saw Pavel Bure paying hockey for the panthers.

What is the cut off for years played for a franchise? This isn't the hall of fame we're talking about.
I would put it at:

- 15 years for a solid, but not a franchise level player
- 10 years for a franchise player
- 8 years for a key member of a SC winning team (more than likely Conn Smythe winner as well), but the number won't be retired until 10-20 years after he's retired

Do you also think Wiess deservs it? Most points in team history and 10 years with the team.
With the way it ended, no. I'd count him in my "15 years" category.

what about luongo? There is no one more deserving. The amount of nights he was the only one to show up on our team.

Yes he is the only one even close to be had in a discussion in my opinion. 3,5 years of Bure and his #10 in the rafters? Thats busch league. P.Karyia did the same for Ducks and he played there a long time and his # aint even in the rafters.

Vanbiesbrouck, Mellanby, Luongo. Some case for Svehla.

We also have to remember that it's up two the owners and Viola and Cifu have no connection to Beezer and Mellanby. Luongo should be the only one in discussion or else we risk setting the standard to low.

In the future Barkov and Ekblad are strong candidates if they keep improving and stay here for the long run.

Umm they just had that game where they honored Beezer for being inducted into the Florida sports hall of fame?

Thats a connection right there and should be enough to warrant a jersey retirement.

He doesnt get into that if he doesnt play for the Panthers. Plain and simple.

We will run out of # in 20 years if this would be the standard. If you look how often a jersey gets retired in NA sports you would easily find this thread ridicolous except for the discussion of Luongo in the future if he stays fit and play well for the next 3 years.

Look at Detroit: Fedorov is a beast of a player better then Bure still not in the rafters.

Beezer, 5 seasons, nope.
Mellanby, 7.5 seasons, nope.
Svehla, 7 seasons, nope.

If management wants to acknowledge these players (+ a few others, Laus, Bure, Jovo, etc.), they can hold a tribute night like the Flyers have done this season to Timonen, Gagne and Briere.

Of the current Panthers, Kuli would be my darkhorse. Note: not saying that there aren't others that are worthy, just that he's already in his 7th season with the team (still ways to go to 15 though), DT stuck with him through the difficult years, we have the money to pay him in 2017 and the team is trending upwards. Obviously guys like Ekblad and Barkov are the obvious choices, but Kuli will reach the criteria faster if he remains with the team for another 7-8 years.

Do you think C.Osgood, N.Kronwall and H.Zetterberg should have there jerseys in the rafters at joe louis arena? Or C.Neil and C.Phillips in Ottawa?

To me players like Kulikov are plugs easily forgotten. In my opinion he would need 20 years as a Panthers with his current play to even belong in the discussion.

It's not easy to compare to a team like Detroit, but yes, I think 15 years with the same team is enough to warrant a jersey retirement. That's commitment to the team and the community around it.

And Kuli is no plug by any means.

Eh guys like Beezer and Mellanby can't be weighted simply in years. Those are original Panthers, Mellanby scored the first goal, Rat Trick etc. Beezer is arguably our most iconic player and our first "star" player.
