Why don’t people like Mackinnon?

The greater you are the more you get haters. McDavid has them, Matthews certainly does, Crosby/Ovechkin always have, etc

so yes - MacKinnon has some haters too. But overall, among players of his caliber, I'd say he's very well liked, moreso than others.

McDavid/Crosby/Matthews all have way more haters, for example.
I think it's hilarious how you're trying to insert Matthews in this discussion when he is not anywhere near other players here. Guy's a wimp.

Can you imagine being a teammate of someone who only berates others for their mistakes but you nor any of your peers are allowed to do the same? Pretty toxic environment imo. Easily unlikable characteristic.

The part about 'doesn't really need anyone else pointing it out to him' seems a bit unfair, no?

I'm sure hes a swell guy and all but I think the hard ass and grumpy attitude turns people off and wears them down. Much like a coach, eventually you just tune them out.

What are you even talking about? Who else on the Avs roster is even going to be able to identify what MacKinnon actually did wrong when he made a mistake, let alone tell him what he should do instead? Do you think Parker Kelly telling him that he shouldn't lose control of the puck when trying to skate through 2 or 3 defenders is going to be helpful? What if Sam Girard gives him shooting tips after he fans on a one timer? I absolutely agree his bedside manner could use some work and wouldn't want to hang out with him outside of the rink, but MacKinnon is one of the best in the league and that absolutely qualifies him to tell the other guys what they could/should be doing better.

Don't dislike him, but I dislike that people pretend he is some post-season God/amazing leader or that Colorado should win every playoff series... they have done well one year, mind you, that team did amazingly well and has the best record of any playoff team recently, but other than that, they've had some terrible post-seasons relative to expectations, and likely would never have a Cup without them coming in last that one year and getting Makar because of it.

His "intensity" is slightly annoying, but he is just a loud version of Crosby I feel like, and considering how close they are, it is not surprising.

I think he is overall fairly likable, but how some fans view him irks me a little.

You're reading too much into it. MacKinnon isn't on the level of Crosby/McDavid either. He's just an elite player, among the very top in league - like Matthews. I wasn't trying to equal all 4 players.

But way to prove my point how certain other players - ie Matthews - get way more hate then MacKinnon does.

Mackinnon the hockey player is a sight to see. One of the most entertaining players to watch. He's intense and he's a dog, it's impressive. So yeah, I like the player.

But the man? I mean, it's not fair, I don't know the guy personally, but he seems obnoxious AF, especially as a teammate. He looks mad a lot or annoyed with his teammates, he looks disappointed. He asks a lot from his teammates forgetting that they are not as good as him. His intensity annoys me, I don't like those types of people. For example, I watched the documentary "The Last Dance" and honestly, I loved it, but I like MJ even less. What an asshole. But maybe that is what is needed to win and more power to them. I just personally don't like that.
Exactly. Not everyone wants to live and breathe hockey like he does.

I tried to eat a slice of pizza during a Colorado Avalanche game and suddenly MacKinnon broke through my wall like the Kool-Aid Man. 'GLUTEN? IN MY LOCKER ROOM?' he screamed, knocking the pizza out of my hands. He proceeded to give me a 45-minute lecture on glycemic index while skating laps around my living room. When he was done, he slapped a protein shake into my hand, said 'You wanna win the Cup or not?' and vanished into thin air. My house smells like kale now. Send help

I don’t think he is hated. It’s just elite players can be polarizing. Example with myself is, was, I am a Penguins fan. In my 40’s and a Pens fan my whole life. During the early years of the Sid VS Ovy era I would go blue in my face talking from head to toe crap about Ovy. Couldn’t stand him…

Now. The Caps will always be the #2 rival behind only the Flyers. But I have a mountain of respect for Ovy. Even before he broke the record. I still will cheer against him and his team but I respect him greatly.

I just think young elite talent is polarizing because for majority of fans they only see the on ice effect and do not see a full pie chart of an athlete or person. That younger elite talent is ether your savior or the devil. And MacKinnon isnt some young dude but he is just getting to the place in the past few years where I feel that more people have crossed that polarizing line than are still standing on ether side.

Just my 2 cents. Take it or leave it.

Oh yea, you consider Matthews ELITE PLAYER, when he just lost goal scoring race to a 39 year old that broke his leg and still beat Matthews by 11 goals in 2 less games. Sure bud, it's just hating the leafs, not about facts. This is tiresome.

lol.

I'm not a Leafs fan. I'm a Habs fan.

Yes - I consider Auston Matthews an elite hockey player. As does 99.99999% of the hockey world. Because he is.

But again - case in point - some players get way more hate than others.

I find MacKinnon to be pretty well-liked. :dunno:

A lot of people make fun of him but I think he's just memeable. There isn't any ill feeling behind it.

Also, as far as people rooting for Dallas, as an East fan with no rooting interest, I find Dallas particularly likable. Sick goal song, cool color scheme, electric arena. The Rantanen angle was fun. They're fun to watch.

That doesn't make Colorado unlikable.

Every player is coached differently and some people need scolding to get their best and others need coddling. What do you think pro athletes mostly are comprised of? This isnt the WNBA.
What are we implying about the WNBA?
