Why doesn't NHL allow custom/signature skates like NBA does?

I really don't care what kind of skates they wear, but those are some ugly shoes in the OP.
Tons of people disagree and it helps players stand out in a way many fans like, ie easier marketing for the players and indirectly for the league

It's probably because of an NHL regulation similar to the "media training" where the players are taught how to respond in the most boring robotic ways possible.

The NHL is against any form of personality. I'll bet that if players were allowed to have signature skates, they would sell very well.

What fans? Not sure wearing skates that looked like the 90s vomited on them would be very popular.

Do people seriously think that the NBA players wearing crazy shoes is about "expressing yourself" and not about $$$? Those guys are either trying to sell a shoe, or are being paid to wear a shoe. And everybody buys shoes. What would be the purpose of custom skates? Skates are almost entirely functional, nobody buys skates for the look or aesthetics.

the shoes of your favorite players in the nba are bigger than the jerseys of the teams in the NHL. If you like those giants jumping around instead of the players in the NHL, mby ur watching the wrong sport.

the least athletic people compared to their contracts are in the MLB, but the NBA is a great second

Can't really market or sell skates like you do with basketball sneakers. It's not like you can wear them outside the rink.

All that means is the NBA players make more money lol, definitely not less athletic than the midgets in the NHL

The only reason I remember Nikolai Lemtyugov's name is that he wore white skates at the WJC.

Can you hit a 100 mph fastball? Steal a base? Dunk a basketball?

Anyways, custom skates would never catch on like shoes because you can only wear them on the ice. Going back to Jordan's basketball shoes are a huge part of streetwear, I've never played ball and I had a few pairs. Not that there would be any harm in letting players wear their own skates.

If the big players start it, younger fans / players will pick up on it and copy.

I don’t think NBA players asked a focus group, they just started doing it.

I can find the article later, there was an Athletic article about this company who was actually making customize/stylish skates that was growing. As most NHL players would he scared to try that if they could, I think it would start slowly with a few stars, then a few more would copy. It would be the youngest stars now or maybe the next wave

I don't think anybody really gives 2 shi** about this other than younger kids who play NHL 23 on their consoles. I don't even think 99% would care to do it.

Yeah, the market is just different. People line up outside a shoe store at 5 AM in lawn chairs for the latest Air Jordans. You'd be crazy not to try selling that. Hockey skates don't sell for aesthetics at all.

Personally, I don't think I'd care to see a bunch of different colored skates, either. I don't even really care for all the goalie masks. It's not, like, aesthetically beautiful. It's just clutter.

Look into "skate skins." It's a company a buddy of mine has built and I believe you may see these showing up more around the NHL soon from what I have heard
