They do. Gretzky used to wear white skates in his Ranger days.

Hockey culture frowns on it though but Gretzky is one of those guys that for obvious reasons nobody made a fuss about.

I know Ovi would get boomers harping on him for his yellow laces early in his career. Subban got called out for his celebrations, Don Cherry used to admonish people for pulling off the Michigan in game. Hockey culture just has a stick up its ass.

I don't know if it's a question of "allowed."

The market for sneakers is in a different world from the market for skates.

I believe it's so it levels the playing field in terms of losing the puck against skates, no. Everyone wears black to have an advantage over the goalie. If they had bright yellow skates, for example, the goalie or defenders could pick out the puck a lot easier in front of the net, right?

Plays can and do wear custom made skates, they just can't have any branding on them due to sponsorship agreements. Signature skates could be allowed if there were a sponsorship agreement in place and it fit within uniform policies.

Yup, exactly why they took the glow-puck out of the game too! Goalies were able to pick up on how fast the puck was traveling based off the color of the glow trail.

Back to the topic at hand, I'd say it makes about as much as a difference as using white or black tape on a stick blade. Then you could even break it down further to white holders v.s. black holders (TUUK had some, they were rare, they even had blue)...which you never see anymore.

I really don't care what kind of skates they wear, but those are some ugly shoes in the OP.

I remember Ovi’s tinted visor + gold laces + back side jersey tuck with the long back pad sticking out. Iconic look IMO and the rules trying to end that (tuck and he doesn’t have the back pad out now) had the dumb logic of “fans don’t know who it is”.

I frequently have to check again to see if Orlov (good skater who jumps up) is doing something or if it’s a Ovi because of the font and movement (not always showing the number perfectly) making 8 and 9 look pretty close. Ovi both looked cool and was extremely easy to identify right away



Since jerseys are being tainted anyway with ads some of which blend worse than others
