Why Do We Have 3 Goalies with 2 0n the Way

This is the thing that concerns me about our North American pro scouts: so many of our free agent signings have been non-factors. Part of that is just how free agency goes, but Gosthisbehere is the only signing where we acquired a true difference maker, at least at one end of the ice. That's a very low hit rate.

Why are we expecting or entitled to sign "difference makers" in free agency when so few difference makers actually make it to free agency? Like I said before, this is probably less about scouting and more about what is actually available in free agency. I don't think there is anyone is pro-scouting that told Yzerman that Andy Copp was going to put up 70pts as a number two center on the Wings. The Wings knew what they were getting. The conversation was likely more along the lines of we know what Andy Copp has done historically, we absolutely need another center, he is likely the best player available to us who can play any center at all in free agency, he is going to cost us but we absolutely need another center and have nothing close to ready in GR, if we hit in the draft or free agency in the future, we can always bump him to the wing.....

Where pro scouting has likely failed us is in the trade market, not free agency.

And I'm not sure how much it has really failed us there, or if we just aren't in a position to match what other teams are offering (or players have actively blocked deals to us). You mentioned wanting Carlo, saw an article yesterday saying we were in on it but Toronto's offer was just better.

Maybe Yzerman was just being too cheap, I don't know, but I can't really blame him for not offering up a 1st there.

A lot of the issues with the goaltenders are who's playing in front of them.

Sam Montembeault of Montreal is the new darling of the Bell Centre, all the while having raw numbers that are extremely similar this season to our own Cam Talbot's.

Goaltending is still awful going into the 10th year without playoffs haha

Goaltending has not been awful this season. Talbot stole games several nights and overall gave the Wings a chance to win most nights.

Lyon had some great games but was definitely inconsistent in the back half of the season. And has always shown a weakness on allowing goals on long wristers where he struggles to look around the screen.

If Talbot holds form next season with Mrazek as a backup it should be an upgrade in net. Mrazek can be inconsistent but not anymore so than Lyon was. And there won't be wasting any games on Husso, who got 1 win in 8 starts and posted a .866 Sv %.

Imagine if the Wings managed even a couple more wins had someone been between the pipes other than Husso.

Apparently Bednar is heading to Finland for next season. And Wings have signed Arvid Holm from Rögle, swedish goalie of the year-trophy winner.

Goalie depth chart is shaping up for next season.
NHL:
Talbot
Mrazek

AHL:
Cossa
Holm

ECHL:
Gyrlander
X

NCAA:
Augustine
Guimond

OHL:
Miller
This is good news. Yzerman hasn't been willing to spend a lot on goalies. He initially went with 3 goalies given there were teams that had success going that route, but after the s**tshow involving Reimer and Husso he likely just figured it's better to have two quality goalies rather than the value sized bag of fail.

Yes he has.

Going short-term with veterans, when two kids are on the pipeline.

It's nothing else but the right plan.

Vasilevskiy was in the NHL within 18 months of being drafted.

There was no reason to acquire literally the worst statistical goaltender with more than 10 games played at the Trade Deadline who is under contract through 2026 unless the plan was to continue to spin the wheels (which is unacceptable going into year 7.)

He was not. Was drafted in 2012, made his debut in the 2014-15 season.

He wasn't full time in the NHL until the 2016-17 season, 4 years after his draft.

Looks like I was off by 6 months.

Even so, that's still two years ahead of where Cossa is, who is being left to rot in the minors yet again while Yzerman forces Red Wings fans to look at another year of Petr Mrazek and his 3.50 GAA.

Cossa shouldn't be the full-time starter right now. But there's no reason why he can't begin next season as a backup (or part of a 3-goalie tandem the way they operated the last two years), unless he has an abysmal camp this fall.

He is going to be the third goalie next season. Personally, I think that is the right choice. Being number 3, he has a shot to play his way into a bigger role.

I wouldn't put too much into Mrazek's stats with Chicago. He was pretty decent for us the few games he got to play before his injury. It is also nice to have a goalie that doesn't panic everytime he touches the puck behind the net.

What's wrong with Cossa splitting time next season in the NHL?

Are we afraid he'll be so bad that he'll get demoralized, go home to his mummy, and quit the NHL?

He's going to turn 23 next season and has already spent two seasons in GR. He doesn't need further coddling.

I'm guessing there are specific parts of his game the Wings want him to work on while getting a chance to play the majority of the games. When he was drafted the consensus on him seemed to be he had a ton of raw talent but was very unrefined, whereas a guy like Wallstedt was seen as being talented, but also very refined for his age.

Also, we know from experience that Mrazek breaks down. I wouldn't be surprised if the wings are looking at it and thinking Cossa will get looks in Detroit next year out of necessity. Hell, Mrazek already broke down here in less than a month.

I'm putting stock in seeing Mrazek for five years in Detroit. I didn't want him back ever. I hated that trade from minute one of hearing about it. I can understand what Stevie is saying about having stability at the position, but Mrazek isn't stability and he's certainly not worth another year at 4.5M.

It's not even so much that he'd be keeping Cossa down in GR (he won't, because Mrazek or Talbot is almost certain to be hurt for a sustained period of time next year so Sebastian will get his run) but that I simply do not like Petr Mrazek the goalie and I think that having him at 4.5M over literally any of the other options for a short term goalie they might have considered is a worse idea.

You can plant my flag now, if you compare what they actually provide to teams that sign them... I think Petr Mrazek will be in the bottom third of backup goalies in a price/performance metric. We locked ourselves into paying 7-8M to have below average goaltending unless we get virtuoso Cam Talbot in his late 30s to pull out an amazing year.
