Why do puck drops happen at 7:10

Can we elminate the ceremonies before hand and have the advertised start time be the start time? I mean I show up at 7 or 7:30 local time for hockey not a pre game cermony

And don't get me started with the 15 minute start when its a Canadian national game.

Hey man, Ron McLean’s salary ain’t cheap. They have to squeeze in a few extra commercials to make extra money.

At least the schedule is changing to accurately indicate a 7:07 start.

People used to complain that it said a 700 stsrt and not happen till 707.

Youre never going to get rid of pregame ceremonies and anthems, so you may as well get on board with a 7:07 start

But they can happen before. It gets me to bed earlier and as I get older I appreciate those extra minutes of sleep

They say it's a 7pm game, then drop the puck at 7:08-7:10 to allow people time to get to their seats.

The pregame ceremony is just filler for that. Nothing more.

It also allows the broadcast crew to give a preview of the storyline of each team entering the game so the fans know the impact on the standings moving forward.

You KNOW this is going to happen, so if you don't want to deal with it, show up exactly at 7:10 and risk not being in your seat for puck drop.

It’s definitely time to rethink having the national anthems as part of the pregame. I don’t go to partake in patriotic events where the players are anyway a diverse international crowd. Save it for the Olympics (lol)/WJC. I go to see elite athletes playing their sport.

I'm fine with getting rid of anthems but that's only 2 minutes. The puck drops and celebrations nights are the other 15 that are making people like the OP frustrated. Move these to off days, and make them free to the public, in order to build goodwill.

They say it's a 7pm game, then drop tree puck at 7:08-7:10 to allow people time to get to their seats.

disagree. no one would say this for a work meeting.

Be in your seat by 7. Most people get off at 5 so that's 2 hours. Especially if you're downtown, that's enough time to eat, and go to happy hour.

It's just a hockey culture thing, kinda nice when your getting into the arena running a little late

Soccer begins on the dot of the start time.
It's courtesy for fans in attendance in the US. NFL kickoff for a noon game has been 12:05 as long as I've been alive. You even see it listed as a 12:05 kickoff when looking at game previews online (or in the paper when that was a thing).

Gives those in attendance that extra 5 mins to get to their seats.

I think it is really for TV to do a setup. They aren't going to change their schedules off an even hour, and they come on to introduce, go to the first commercial, and come back for the faceoff.

No big whup. When watching on TV I use those few extra minutes to do some chores before sitting down. If making those minor adjustments in life is a problem for some, I think they need to work on it more than the NHL......I mean, I hate to sound critical, but the phrase "pick your battles carefully" comes to mind.

I would agree, except even preseason games without TV do the same.
It's for those in attendance to get to their seats. TV uses that time as well when they broadcast, but it's not like before television came along they were dropping pucks exactly at 7 either.

The 3 stoppages being extended for commercial breaks are for TV, but the delayed puck drop has been there long before.

Hell, when I go to a high school hockey game that says 7pm start, they also drop the puck between 7:08-7:10. This, like I said, is courtesy for fans in attendance to get to their seats.

Baseball does it right. Or at least here they do at the SkyDome.

Any pre-game ceremonies at 6:45. Anthems at 6:55. By the time the players settle in and then take the field for warm up, first pitch flies at 7:07 as advertised.

The NHL starts the broadcasts at 7:07 once the festivities start.
