Why do puck drops happen at 7:10

Because we have to unnecessarily play the national anthem every game. They should only be played during international tournaments imo, always thought it was dumb and stupid to play them before every game. But gotta have that forced patriotism
Even without the anthem, it's a guarantee in the entertainment industry that 5-10 mins after the event time on the ticket, before the event actually begins.

Ever been to a 7pm play that had the curtain raise at 7pm?

In Edmonton, we're lucky if the puck drops 20 minutes after the advertised start time.

Welcome to the world. Use the information you have learned and show up at 7:10. That will save you the precious 10 minutes per game and would have saved you the time you spent creating and monitoring this thread. You are welcome.

They should get rid of anthems in the league.

Sure, play them when Sweden play Canada. Finland plays USA. etc. You know, when countries play other countries!

But playing them in the league before the start of each game is ridiculous.

I would agree, except even preseason games without TV do the same.
It's for those in attendance to get to their seats. TV uses that time as well when they broadcast, but it's not like before television came along they were dropping pucks exactly at 7 either.

The 3 stoppages being extended for commercial breaks are for TV, but the delayed puck drop has been there long before.

Hell, when I go to a high school hockey game that says 7pm start, they also drop the puck between 7:08-7:10. This, like I said, is courtesy for fans in attendance to get to their seats.
Yes, it's probably both. Here in Dallas, if it was for people to get to their seats, we have portions of our crowd arriving fashionably late, and if the delay was for them, the game would be announced at 7 and started at about 7.45, or maybe later.......

Never has a more first world problems post been made!

OP has a point. People are paying for entertainment. And the pre-game stuff is mostly foolish anyway. Please get rid of the anthems and ceremonial puck drop. Just play hockey.

I can't speak or where you live, but no prices includes tax with the exception of a marijuana dispensary or two

Tax is always added in afterwards for vehicle sales, fast food, at Target, pizza places, you name it

The vast majority of things in Europe all come with tax included. As it should be.

It's all about TV.
Except, it's not. TV just uses the time that was already there. It never started exactly at the ticket time even prior to TV. Entertainment industry standard... TV or not... you give the audience time to get settled.

As I said, it's even at HS levels, it's in any entertainment event. Go to a comedy, the first joke isn't dropping at 7pm either. Go to a play, the curtain isn't rising at 7pm...

ONLY TV shows start on the dot. Entertainment events with people in attendance never have.

Jays games start at 7:07 so...

I assume it is giving the sports networks time to introduce the game.

It also allows people a few extra minutes to get to their seat.

Genuinely why does anybody care about this?

You don't find it annoying to tune in for a game at 7:08 expecting the puck to drop, only to eventually find that puck doesn't drop until 7:15, 7:20, 7:30 with no mention of when it will actually happen?

Wild/Blackhawks play tomorrow listed at 4pm for the event, a quick google search shows puck drop is at 4:08 CT.
Now... if you have an event that is listed as starting at 7pm, puck drop at 7:08 and they don't drop it until 7:20 or even 7:30... I can understand the complaints.

If you google something like "Wild Blackhawks march 25th" the results show 4:00pm, including on nhl.com.

That wouldn't be so annoying if :08 was always the time, at least everyone would know it's going to be 4:08. But in the NHL it could easily end up being 4:30. It should just show the puck drop time on nhl.com/scores, you shouldn't have to do a google search to find out when a game will actually start.
