News Article: Why did Nathan Horton leave the Bruins, really?

Rumor #1: Either he or his wife had an affair and he wants to leave Boston to get out of the area "for a new beginning".

Rumor #2: He and Seguin had a serious fight over that first line RW role. Remember, once Horton decided to leave the Seguin move became moot. Prior to that, Horton was interested in staying and Chia thought they were going to work something out. Once Horton saw they couldn't move Seguin, he decided to leave "for a new beginning".

There you go.

Didn't Horton say he was going to explore free agency before all the Seguin rumors came up though?

There's a difference, though, between posting on a message board and writing for the Boston Globe's website, wouldn't you say?

In theory yes, probably less so in practice... My point being that lack of a strong pedigree doesn't invalidate an opinion.

I bet I am the only fan who doesn't care about Horton leaving and is actually happy. Yes he helped in 2011 but since those injuries he floated around a lot.

You should've watched these playoffs this year. They were actually pretty entertaining even though we lost.

I don't begrudge him for chasing the money.

He's had concussion issues and this could be his last chance to really cash out. It's why I didn't think they'd be able to bring him back. This next contract is going to take care of his family for life, regardless of how he plays or if he gets hurt. Good luck to him (and I'm glad the B's had the good sense not to be the ones to give him the contract he's looking for.)

This is how I feel. These guys don't make nearly as much money as you'd think with taxes, agents fees, etc. Careers are short, you don't know how many more contracts you're going to get and that money has to last you pretty much forever. He has a family to think about. I love him and wish we could find a way to keep him, but that's just the way it is sometimes. Sucks. He should get a standing ovation every time he comes back here, same with Ference.

I'm going to invent a rumor based on your two rumors...

Rumor #3: His wife had an affair WITH Seguin. :naughty:

Rumor #4: Martian interference.

Also, as far as the "fresh start" comment, I do find it odd, but I don't think it's anything like he didn't like it here or anything like that. I think it was either him trying to be polite about wanting more money (which, like I said above, I don't think leaving for more money should be looked down upon).

Or he/his wife would just prefer to live in a place where it's nice year round. I remember following his wife when she was on Twitter, and they would go back to Florida in the offseason and live there, or at least spend a good amount of time there. Either way, he was an incredible player here and was a massive part of one of the best moments of my life, so I would never have anything bad to say about him.

A very unceremonious way to leave a town that loved him, that's for sure.

A town that loved him?

Pretty sure most of the talk this year was that Horton had to be better, and that most people were more then willing, would be happy even to see him walk away in the off season for nothing. People fell back in love with him again in the playoffs because his game improved, but for the better part of the year Boston wasn't a town that loved him. That's just overly dramatic hyperbole.

I was a little miffed when I heard that he wanted a "fresh start" or whatever.

The Bruins have become one of the top franchises in the league, a place you'd think guys would want to stay. I at least thought he would give them a chance to make an offer (who knows maybe they did) but it seems like he dismissed returning outright.

I have a feeling he will regret leaving, but then again, I don't really know what's important to him.

BUT...unfortunately for all involved, including us, Seguin worked the belly button for a half hour then looked up and said - "are you close?".

Thus the trade rumors.

There may be a ton of reasons Nate wants to leave, none of which have anything to do with the Bruins or the city of Boston. The media talked all playoffs about how Horton was in on 'X out of X' goals that the Bs scored. His stock is pretty high right now even with the shoulder. I would think most athletes would at least dabble in free agency if their stock was high. He has nothing to lose. Also his family may prefer living somewhere else. That isn't a slight against the city of Boston. They may just prefer living elsewhere. The guy has taken a beating the last few years. Maybe he wants to play a style of hockey that isn't as taxing on the body. That may also include taking a fat pay day and playing for a losing team that won't go deep in the playoffs. The guy has a ring maybe he just wants to get paid and ride off into the sunset. I'm sure there are guys in the league who are more than happy to do that.

Regardless of the reason, I wish Nathan Horton nothing but the best. He frustrated the ever living daylights out of me but he managed to get some timely goals while he was in Boston.

More proof that the fans take things more personally than the players.

Has his ring, history of concussion problems, make hay while the sun shines....

That's possible. Maybe he knows he wants more money than the Bs can offer, he doen't want to admit that publicly, and furthermore, he doesn't want to leave the Bs hanging, thinking he might come back. At least this way, they can move on to other things. Felger was wondering why Horton wouldn't leave all options open as a free agent, if he is trying to get more money, but there will probably be plenty of teams bidding for his services, and he knows the Bruins won't be a high bidder. He could actually be doing the Bs a solid, saying, don't waste your time on me guys, I'm gone.

I think the opinion of him was positive in the end. And trust me, I'm not biased, which might be inferred from my username.

Funny about Kaufman, he worked for the PBruins for a long time, yet still looks like he just got out of college.

They probably offered him 3.5 to 4mil. He was probably at Bergeron to Lucic money.

What's important to him is likely not having to actually work after hockey. Which could be the next big check or head shot he sustains. Or the next time he eats a right hand in a ill advised fight. Therefore, being able to send his kids to college, support his current lifestyle, w/o having to work at Dick's sporting goods after his career is over. Can't eat his lunch for that.

I don't begrudge him at all. It's his right to go out and make as much money as he possibly can. Just thought it was surprising that he dismissed the Bs outright. What happens if he goes on the open market and can only get Bickell money? Could the Bs match that? Maybe.

A few posts after this one, after looking at someone else's post, I kinda thought that he was going for the money, which is fine, and just didn't want to admit that publicly, and didn't want to leave the Bruins hanging.

Depending on where he ends up, I still think he might regret the decision professionally, but certainly not financially.
