News Article: Why did Nathan Horton leave the Bruins, really?

Lots of good thoughts here... I would only counter with Horton was the never bumped down like many others have been ... Great in playoffs floats to much during season but blame always goes elsewhere like its Krech not skating and Looch not hitting or scoring.. We will finally see people ;)

Very true and its actually probably the wife thing but I just don't get how anyone thinks its all money . Please don't rush here to tell me how he would've got a way better contract elsewhere I get that but we never reached that point.

I know some folks that are close to the Horton camp

Nathan Horton, first and foremost, is a devout father and husband. Secondly he is a hockey player. Nate doesn't have to scrap and claw to break a roster or put up points. He does it naturally with top 3 draft pick pedigree and a healthy love of the game. 2011 was his swan song, he won a cup, and played in 2 SC Finals. This is speculation, but that might be good enough for him. At this point it's living somewhere nice where is family is comfortable and geting the most money he can for his families future.... and that's ok.

Not everyone wants to spend their career in the meat grinder of Boston, ruining there bodies ragged annually in the playoffs, all while getting bashed by the media.

Not everyone is Patrice Bergeron, or Zdeno Chara, Mark Recchi, or Greg Campbell.

Some dudes just want to win a cup in their career, get the fattest paycheck, Live in a nice climate, have some extended summers, and ultimately do it while having some fun playing puck.

Nathan Horton, when it's all over, will have lived everyone of those scenarios in his career.. good for him.

I'm going to have to go all Alec Baldwin in GlenGarryGlenRoss on this one. It's great that he's a good family man and everything but... "Good family man? Then go home and play with your kids." You wanna work here, then sell! You can't score goals here? then hit the bricks, pal cuz you are going OUT!

I'm a family man, too, don't get me wrong. But if Nate can't hack doing what it takes to be a Boston Bruin, no problem. Nice knowing ya. Being a Boston Bruin ain't for everyone.

Nathan Horton is not Machine Levine or Ricky Roma. Nathan Horton drinks all the coffee he wants, has all the steak knives he wants, and drives all the Cadillacs he wants.

First place for Nathan Horton is $6 Millions Dollars.. Second place is $6 Million Dollars.. and Third place is that he's fired.. oh wait.. no it isn't.. it's actually $6 Million Dollars

If Nathan prefers Rio Rancho to Charlestown, MA then so be it.

:yo: :sarcasm:

I agree but the "fresh start" comment came off weird to me. They could have just explore other options/offers. But "fresh start" seems like its more than $$.

Either that, or pretty horrendous PR spin by the agent. See, its not about the money, he just didn't like it here.

Is he thinking the injuries are not going to follow him? :)

But real life isn't a Mamet play. It's a lot messier and not as clever and well-written.

My son is autistic. I have friends (through an autism listserv) who have moved across the country for the sake of their kids. I have no idea what's happening with Horton (and despite the earlier jokes about rumors, I don't wish to start one), but IMO it is possible he's simply putting his family first. And if he is, that's his business.

Seriously. Must you make such an effort to suck any fun out of what serves as a nice diversion from most of our daily grinds? It's why many of us are here.
Sorry for your son's autism. I am hoping that is not an incorrect thing to say.

Ya, I mean it's highly unlikely he has a family situation going on. His kids are going to grow up fine, their dad is an NHL player and their mother is a model. Financially, they're set.

If it's medical, why are you leaving Boston? There's no better place to be. So I would rule that out. Both Nathan and Tammy are from Ontario; if you make the argument they want to go "home", then you're writing him onto the Leafs or Sens; I don't see either.

I suspect we'll be changing our tunes and all recognizing it is financial when he goes and signs a 5y/$30m deal in like Carolina or some place. Either that or Mrs. Horton misses life on the beach.

He wants both years and big cap hit we don't want to offer either.

We got 3 good years out of him, this is a hit and miss player, its OK to move on.

I'm also fine with it. Not because he's a floater (imho he isn't), but because his best days are behind him, his injuries have been too significant to put 6m+ in, and imho if we're trying to replace about 20-25 goals a year out of him, we can do it without paying 6m.

I think the Bruins can replace him but up until he got injured the man was playing great hockey, not sure how you can suggest his best days are behind him.

I can't think of a more terrible place in the world to raise kids than Boston. You only have access to some of the most prestigious schools in the world from kindergarden to college. To think, being able to send your kids to Phillips Academy, The Groton School, or Roxbury Latin. What a terrible place to be.

It astonishes me that in this day and age with this type of situation we have to ask the question of WHY he wants to leave.....LOL....Let me make it quite simple.

We realistically only have 4-4.5 and maybe 5M to pay....He wants MORE and thinks he can get more. That's why Chiarelli left the door open. Horton will test the market. Why not ? Maybe he gets six years 6 mill.....or 5 years six mill ??? He wats LOOCH money and feels he deserves it. Right or wrong.

If nobody steps up to the plate then maybe they work a deal out here and give him and extra year.

Why is he leaving though should not be that hard to figure.

The link on boston.com's Bruins page is broken, but I found the article...good read. Like Kaufman, I've been thinking all along - a new start from what? Is he miserable at having hooked up with a winning team? Bottom line, looking for more $$$$, regardless of where he plays...that's his personal decision, but hope he'll be happy taking $6M/year while playing for a Florida like team again.

Sorry, I don't get your comment. Offering theories is "sucking the fun" out of a thread? Isn't that what everyone is doing?

Remember Cliff Lee? He turned down a more lucrative contract from the Yankees to sign with Philly because of his son's medical condition. You'd think New York wouldn't lack for hospitals, though, right? But Philly had the specialists they needed.

It's difficult that my son has autism, thank you, but we're luckier than most. Autism is odd in that every person with it is unique. It's not a matter of here we have the best schools, or great medical facilities. A child might desperately need his grandmother, or a warmer climate, or any of a thousand things that might not occur to you or me.

Again, I am NOT saying that Horton's child is autistic. But I am saying there might be personal, family issues that are taking priority. And again, that is just a theory, nothing more.

Yep. Agree w/ everything you said.

The majority of this board needs to take a collective chill pill.
