Why did Detroit pass on Q. Hughes?

2018 draft was literally the start of Detroit's rebuild lol.
The rebuild, honestly, started in 2012 after Lidstrom retired. Holland/ownership just didn't want to admit it for 6 years before eventually Mr Illitch passed and Holland was shown the door. If Holland just had the guts to retire when he said he was going to (when Lidstrom did), Detroit probably would not have had as big a job to rebuild the team as other teams do.

2012 would be the window closing. You can't really call 2012 to early 2018 a rebuild when the team is still trying buy at TDLs and signing FAs to try to go on runs.

The signal that Holland had finally diverted toward rebuilding was the Tatar trade.

No it didn't

Yeah, but ……he seemed like a no brainer there.
In the final NHL central scouting ranking, QH as ranked 6th among NA skaters. Zadina was 3rd, Bouchard was 4th and Dobson was 5th.

The top pick in the draft was from Europe, and so was the #3 pick, so based on ranking, QH was actually picked higher than predicted.

Why do you think that QH was the no-brainer pick?

Just curious. I’m a Kings fan and thought it odd at the time. Never really put a lot of effort in diving into that decision but have come around to it again. Thought he was highly touted after his World Championship outing. Why did Detroit pass on the local kid?
Because Ken Holland was the GM??

Why did the Canucks pass on Tkachuk?
Because Benning ran out of time :naughty:

Because Detroit wasn't rebuilding lol.

We can talk all day about their window being closed, but they quite clearly were not trying to rebuild until 2018.
Sorry. I'm a Wings fan agreeing with you. That was technically "rebuilding on the fly" as Holland called it. But that's definitely not what it was.

Yep. I think Holland's idea of rebuilding on the fly was replacing Datsyuk with an absurd Frans Nielsen contract until he was 38 lol.

Small OFD’s fail all the time. When they work out, obviously, it’s great. But if they don’t, they’re usually completely useless at the NHL level. You’ve gotta be pretty confident taking one of those guys high in the draft. Kinda like goalies, it’s easier to take that risk in the later part of the first or second period.

Zadina at the time was considered tee much better prospect. I don’t think there was a single scouting service who had him above Zadina.

The wings need an electrifying goal scorer just as much as they needed a D, and Zadina at the time was seen as the more sure bet than Hughes at the time.

Also, Ken Holland was their GM.

There is 19 lists, only 1 had Hughes rated Higher

true Jim Benning is a genius

Often when I look at drafts, and the distribution of "awesome/terrible" picks, I see something which resembles a random distrubution.

IMO, most steals in the draft are related more to the GM getting lucky than being a genious.

Besides, one pick does not make it spring.

Didn't Jim Benning with another dude call it a "homerun" as soon as they drafted him? There was a draft day video of it. I feel like you don't call it a "homerun" unless you are fully confident about your pick. They most likely had Hughes in their top 5 but I could be wrong.
Yep, it was because of Judd Brackett that we got Quinn Hughes. I don't know what that guy is saying regarding Weisbrod, Weisbrod was a dumbo lol
