Why did Detroit pass on Q. Hughes?

It's just funny to read some of the scouting reports: "Zadina has quick hands and feet, thrives in tight and small spaces and is able to get off an incredible release on a shot that is arguably the best in the draft, as his 44 goals in 57 games would attest. He’s not as big and powerful as Svechnikov or Tkachuk — relative to the other top picks, Zadina’s physical testing scores at the NHL combine were, at best, average — but his ability to make plays and score goals is as good as it gets."

Like that bolded isn't important? Has to be fun being a scout freezing your nuts off in Prince George, Omsk and Rouyn-Noranda when someone like Ken Holland is just going to overrule you at the end of the day. "He's a scorer."
Yes Zadina was high all year and productive but there were some late emerging red flags. If he wasn’t playing in a rapidly declining Quebec league as far as nhl prospects go, it might have been caught and he would have dropped more.

Didn't he leave Detroit after the 2018 draft? 2019 was his first draft in Edmonton where he selected Broberg over Zegras.
Oh I'm a dingus, Ken Holland's draft record

I actually did.
Really, your post history about the 2018 NHL draft is all mocks that have Zadina going ahead of Hughes.

Interesting.

You are revisionist history.

I was a Canucks fan and I wasn't sold on Hughes before the draft either.
There were also like 4 defensemen that were lumped together in a random order to round out the top ten on most draft lists - Dahlin was going to be 1st-overall all year.
- Hughes
- Bouchard
- Dobson
- Boqvist
It's rare that, in retrospect, there are more than 3 HOF-quality defenseman in the top-10 of the draft, and Hayton and Kotkaniemi were both big risers, so Zadina was a perfectly reasonable pick and was considered the top forward in many publications after Svechnikov.

I don't think even Vancouver knew Quinn was gonna be this good. The decision to select him was partially (or fully) motivated by John Weisbrod's relationship with Hughes Sr. The Jim Benning draft choice would've probably been Bouchard or Dobson... neither of which were bad picks.

They didn’t listen to me. Ranked Hughes 1st at various points predraft, and always top 3.

Didn't Jim Benning with another dude call it a "homerun" as soon as they drafted him? There was a draft day video of it. I feel like you don't call it a "homerun" unless you are fully confident about your pick. They most likely had Hughes in their top 5 but I could be wrong.

Played on Team USA with Blashill and Larkin at the world championships before the draft. Even roomed with Larkin… NBC did an entire feature on Hughes right before our pick

Ken Holland masterclass

I don’t think people realize just how down bad this organization was when Yzerman took over

People will ask this question and then be the same people that think Yzerman is a failure for not turning the team around in 4 years lol.

He started with our best players being Larkin and Anthony Mantha... And our top prospects as Zadina and Veleno. But should've turned it around in four years.

Perhaps, but he totally bucked the trend of the typical Benning defenseman which was essentially just...big. Again I'm sure Benning was eventually convinced of how good Hughes was, but the Weisbrod familial relationship + an excellent American scout in Brackett definitely tipped the scales.

Just curious. I’m a Kings fan and thought it odd at the time. Never really put a lot of effort in diving into that decision but have come around to it again. Thought he was highly touted after his World Championship outing. Why did Detroit pass on the local kid?
Because people are seeing what he has done and not what they thought he was going to do.

Monday morning quarterback discussions are always fun

Was that a ranking or mock, I can’t even remember? I remember thinking that after the worlds he seemed like a good pick for Detroit.

Again, not knocking any player or pick. Zadina had a ton of hype at the time. At the time it wasn’t a reach. Just remember watching it and being surprised even with Zadina there giving all the connections around Detroit.

Great job, I guess, I’m going that far back on the threads to try to get a burn in.

I’m not trying to make anyone feel bad or rub salt in wounds. I was just curious in what into that decision given Hughes year and Zadina’s signing with the sharks it put it back on my mind.

Let’s be real, why did Buffalo, Carolina, Montreal, Ottawa, Arizona and Detroit pass on Hughes?
Also why did New Jersey, Philly, and Dallas pass on Makar?

Why did New York, Chicago, Colorado, and LA pass on Seider?

Why did New York and LA pass on Stutzle?

And on and on and on.

zadina is just too good
That pick was a rebuild killer 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

I just also want to talk about Zadina. He's got a decent shot this year but boy does get pushed off the puck so easily. He's such a lightweight, even when he tries to hit others and fails at moving the guy at all.
Yeah, he has a decent shot and puckhandling and passing ability. But they arent good enough to carry him when he brings little else to the table, IMO.
