Why are the Ducks of Anaheim so hated on Hockey's Future?

I don’t have anything personal against the ducks, but in general I’m not a fan of the teams that have made the playoffs 7 of the last 8 years and don’t win anything. Teams like Minnesota, St Louis, Rangers, Washington, San Jose, Anaheim, etc. I’d rather root for a new team.

I love the Ducks. (aside from Kesler)
But my brothers and a few friends hate them as they all view them as the dirtiest team in the league.
For me they're one of a half dozen teams in the league with a personality. Will be a sad day when Getz and Perry retire or move on.

I think Anaheim fans for the most part can admit a couple of their players (Kesler) play can occasionally cross a line. Literally every single team has players like that. But the team as a whole. Absolutely not. Would love to see a Nashville fan acknowledge some of their spearers and floppers
Don't hold your breath
Compare the number of major penalties and suspensions for every team and you'll see that it's all in your head. The Ducks play heavy, in your face hockey and have some guys who are definitely toeing the line on a nightly basis. But in terms of actual dirty hockey, ie taking liberties and showing disrespect to the opponent with reckless and dangerous hits causing injury , I'm not seeing the evidence to support that the Ducks are truly dirty in comparison to other teams.

I actually find it quite humorous that Corey Perry, a pest with one career suspension, carries a worse reputation around here than blatant repeat headshot offenders.
Confirmation bias aggravated by his pest style of hockey.

They also have to seem some issues with "dirty" minors this year. They're #3 in the league in roughing calls, #3 in the league for interference, #1 in the league for slashing, and #9 in the league for cross-checking.

Not a good look.

(They're also part of a 4-way tie for #4 in the league for goaltender interference, but that's relatively rarely called so there's not much separation between teams. Also, they're near the bottom of the league for majors for boarding, but those are also relatively rare.)

The longest suspension given to a Ducks player in recent memory was for a slight bum tap on a linesman. You can bring up all the minor penalties you want, if the Ducks were truly dirty and not just an aggressive hockey team, why do other teams face a much higher rate of major penalties and suspensions?

I've never seen so much hate and salt from neutral fans toward a non rival team. Go into any GDT on the mainboards when the Ducks are playing and you will find people incessantly *****ing about the team.

I don't really understand it? They are led by one of the more likeable and underrated players in the league in Ryan Getzlaf. Perry can be annoying but I don't see people *****ing about Boston or Calgary (Marchand Tkachuk) all the time here.

What is it?

This is hyperbole. Surely you've seen how people on HF feel about the Leafs, Pens, Habs, Oilers, etc.?

true

it's pretty much just kings/jets/flames/oilers/sharks fans that actually have a reason to hate the ducks
Funnily enough, I think the vitriol flung around between the Ducks, Kings and Sharks fans on here has been a lot less recently. At least it feels like it.

It's mainly the Alberta teams' fans and a few Nashville fans who seem to lose their mind as soon as the Ducks as a topic get brought up.

Anaheim is #3 in the league in majors. The bulk of them, tho - indeed, the bulk of majors for ALL teams - are for fighting.

And the rate of suspensions is not that different - several teams have one suspension this season, and Anaheim is among them due to an interference call against Cogliano.

I'm not saying that Anaheim is dirty - just that there's indications that suggest folks feeling that way might be a tad justified.

Games with the Ducks involved always feel excessively chippy and scrummy after whistles. And to be honest, you guys are tough to play against. But mostly bc Kessler is a ****

My point is, I have a tough time putting a "dirty" label on a team that has earned all of two suspensions totalling four games for player on player contact over the past two seasons.

When you're team identity is built around being aggressive and tough to play against, of course you're going to take your fair share of minors. If anything, playing that way without drawing a standout number of suspensions proves that they are not dirty, but merely good at toeing the line.

I guess the argument here is over the definition of dirty. The penalties you mentioned are all ones that can occur from aggressive defending or they're not things I consider dirty. When I think dirty hockey - blindside hits, intentionally targetting the head, hits from behind, spearing, slew footing...those are the types of incidents that I associate with the term. I really don't see Ducks players being involved in those incidents at any higher rate than players on other teams and the suspension/fine trackers support that.

Chippy/physical/tough does not equal dirty, but that doesn't mean opposing fans have to like them either.

Predators are the most penalized team in the league and just got another “no goal” screw job by the league. Basically they get no calls unless they “sell” them and even then they get a bunch of diving penalties.
