Why are the Devils 21-4-1? insane easy schedule, makes perfect sense.

Does 35-13-5 make more sense? Asking for a friend.

The thread premise was a bit silly when it started but the Devils have come back down to earth since the post went up, coming in at a 14 - 9 - 4 record.

And it took a Boston team who's been all world since the start of the year and a Carolina team who's gone on 2 different long win streaks to get past them. And nice math, they've gone 24-10-5 since this thread went up.

Does the west ever suck. It's an insane discrepancy this year. All of those west teams have inflated point totals due to much easier schedules and they are still way behind. If I'm a west team that has shown anything I'm going for it. How many west teams are playoff teams in the east? Probably only Dallas and Winnipeg?

NJ has the most points in the NHL in calendar year 2023. 12-2-3 = 27 points in 17 games played.

They had a dreadful four weeks in December, but that's pretty much it.

To be fair, their level of play has dropped considerably. They’re a good, talented team and can win in a variety of ways. But they do need to pick it up before the playoffs (plenty of time).
I’m really poking fun at the original post about the 11-3 start. (Title was changed a few times)

That’s a 73% winning percentage. We are currently at a 71% winning percentage. Not far off at all.

Analytically, the Devils are playing worse in January than they did in during the losing streak in December. They are finding ways to win but the level of play has dropped. They need secondary scoring and a Timo Meier.

I think the biggest concern was the goaltending and that Vanecek had never done something like this before, but he has kept it up.

Safe to assume they'll be in the playoffs and very likely a top 3 seed in the Metro.

The question for their front office is what do they add to the roster, and if it is a bigger piece or smaller adds to build depth. They're ahead of schedule, possibly even 2 years ahead of where they thought they would be. If they don't land Meier, I think they'll go the route of depth pieces.

The only team ahead in points percentage is the Rangers (1 less GP and 1 less point). The other question will be since the team is young, they've never been in playoff push games at the end of the season with their positioning being at stake. They'll be leaning on their vets to guide the young guys through it. Having most of those vets be on defense will probably help.

Yeah, Palat is gonna be their defacto captain come playoffs. Guys like Marino and Dougie will help too but they've never won the Cup.

Soft team?

I think the fact that they keep pumping wins from ultra tight games is a good hint that they can perform in high stress games. The Seattle game was really good one, Seattle can play really intense forecheck, but the Devils still managed to pickpocket the points.

I think we've seen the last of GeorgeLeafer12 in this thread, I can't imagine he's going to quadruple down on his terrible takes about the Devils.

Exactly. This is part of what makes it hilarious. When the Devils had the December losing skid but were, most nights, still playing well, the haters all came out of the woodwork with “hah, the real Devils are here and they suck, look, losses. THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE.”

Now, they’re actually playing mediocre and for the first time this season squeaking out wins they didn’t really deserve. This is when the haters should be coming out with ‘they suck and if they keep playing like that they won’t survive a playoff’. Which would be accurate. But they were so bad at identifying when they were losing games they deserved to win they’d look especially petty now talking about them winning games they deserved to lose.

Probably won’t actually stop them tho.

Sounds like the Rangers tbh. They were playing sustainable winning hockey earlier in the year, but losing anyway. Then they started to not play as well, but were getting more wins

In a nutshell, hockey’s weird.
