Why are Boston Bruins the most hated team throughout the NHL?

While I don't think they are the most hated team, I can see how people would dislike them. They have at times been a very rough team, even dirty at times. They have Marchand who is impossible to like. They have Jack Edwards. And at the end of the day, Boston sports teams have been winning a lot of championships in the last 20 years. That's going to create a lot of jealousy.

Most people on hear have no clue what you are referring to because they weren’t born yet.
Are there hockey fans who haven't seen that clip? I was born in 89 and know exactly what that reference is, I've seen it dozens of times.

Boston Bruins Are The World's Most Hated NHL Team: Reddit (PHOTOS)

It is just a pair of sources. May be I am mistaken. I don’t have a clear picture as Iam living far away from both Canada and the USA. But based on what Iam reading in the internet and watch on YouTube it is just so.

That second link is from a random Reddit user.
we can't be certain about the methodology that helped draw up these maps

And if you drill down to the state level, it's pretty clear why some teams are where they are. For example, the Pens are most hated team in PA because Philly is a lot bigger than Pittsburgh. They have more people to vote against their rival.

I'd imagine a similar reason for Boston turning up as the most hated in this guy's study. Toronto has more fans than anyone across the globe, and right now the Bruins are their biggest rival.

I don't think it's accurate anymore (Leafs are way more hated), but in the early 2010s they definitely were for a number of reasons:

1. They played physically, often on the edge - players like Lucic and Shawn Thornton would get rough and throw hits that were suspendable. Which leads into...
2. A really dumb conspiracy theory that pervaded around here that because Colin Campbell's son was on the team while he was in charge of player discipline that the league let the Bruins get away with murder - which is objectively false in every way, but didn't stop Montreal and Vancouver fans from peddling that agenda.
3. Brad Marchand is a pest's pest and a lightning rod. He's supposed to be hated by the other 30 teams in the league, that's what makes him effective.
4. They succeeded in the late 2000s/early 2010s by playing a style that wasn't very sexy. Julien pushed a defense-first system, and the team won through depth and journeymen like Tim Thomas rather than elite goalscorers or things that make highlight reels.
5. They're natural rivals with two of the largest and most vociferous fanbases in the league (MTL & TOR), and through playoff meetings rubbed up against two more (PHI & VAN) - that amplifies the hate.
6. Boston and New England have had absurd success in sports over the past two decades, so there's the feeling that Boston fans don't deserve to see any more wins when the Red Sox and Patriots have been bringing home handfuls of titles
7. Jack Edwards is a master of propaganda and Bruins fans love defending their activities and have in some cases even bought into their status as the bad guys.

Toronto and Montreal (not sure about Vancouver anymore.) They’re not #1 but they’re definitely not liked very much in New York; I’d imagine it’s the same in Philly and Tampa Bay.

I would say the Leafs are the most hated.
Sans rivals and HFBoards, I don’t think Americans really care one way another about the Leafs.

I hate them, but I dunno about most hated in the league. Bruins fans here are okay, but the ones you meet in the arena... Ugh.

Have read in numerous internet sources that Boston Bruins are by far the most hated team in the NHL.

During the last decade I can easily refer this to the likes of Marchand, Chara, Horton, Lucic or S. Thornton, but is it historically only linked with their style of play i.e. the fact that Bruins have always been a harsh, tough and sometimes dirty team or there are also other reasons behind that?

Nope

Most loved

Most hated is Tampa

I don't even mind the Bruins anymore. From that 2011 team, the only one remaining that I really disliked is Chara. Lucic, Horton, Ference, Boychuk, Thornton, all gonezo. Never did mind Marchand

brad marchand...

I have talked to many hockey fans about this and very few if any knew what I was talking about until they googled it. Personally I remember it well, but I am old and it was gold.
