If GR wins the Calder this year, Watson, if they don't a plug coach (Maybe Gallant) for a year or two until GR wins.

SY knows the wings are not cup contenders yet so I doubt seeing him changing things up unless things go really sideways, Newsy will finish out his contract.

Why isn't Bowman ridiculed as badly as Quenneville? Serious question. Like one guy walks into a cup-cake situation with Edmonton and is hardly mentioned, Quenneville, for whatever reason, is hated still and most fans can't stand the name.

I think Watson is the next guy in line from Grand Rapids personally. Seems to be "groomed" for the job for multiple years. Idk if Lalonde gets fired till end of season if he does get fired.

I'm glad you started this thread, @Indrid Cold, because I was just reading the Lalonde thread and thinking that we needed another thread for this. They're similar topics, but also different enough to warrant separate threads.

I want someone without any ties to the organization or previous ties to SY. If I recall, didn't Yzerman make the remark before he hired Lalonde that he found it hard to hire someone he didn't already have a familiarity with, or something like that? That philosophy needs to change.

We need the development coach who has experience with a young team but also success with one. I hate to say it, but Quenneville checks those boxes. I don't really love that idea, but he is the best experienced coach currently on the market until dominoes start falling from teams around the league.

I want nothing to do with Quenneville.

But I agree the nepotism in this organization is a major issue. Gallant would be a decent stop-gap if Watson isn't ready yet.
We can't keep with Lalonde, he sucks really bad.

Probably get serious about a coach when they get serious about the lineup - if we are waiting on drafted talent to mature seems most are good with development for the next 2-3 years. Lalonde isn't the answer but not sure they are looking for it yet either - content with being middling team.

I'm down with Quen. He would have a lot of people PO'd, but he would make the team punch above their weight.

Detroit to DC to Chicago
Even putting aside the major scandal, Quenneville is 66 years old man. That puts him at one of if not the very oldest coach in the league. He’s also been out of the game for a good stretch here.

Could he squeeze more wins out of this team than Lalonde? I suspect he probably could. Is he the guy you want at the helm as we weave in Edvinsson, Johansson, Kasper, Danielson, Cossa, etc.? I’m not so sure.

At the complete opposite end of the spectrum, is it too early for David Carle?

One more thing, I think fans need to be realistic about who we can attract. A neutral observer would probably say that this team is in no man’s land. Lalonde has arguably overachieved here and the fans apparently want him gone. If you’re the top coach on the market, are you coming to Detroit? I wouldn’t.

I haven't mentioned Bowman because no one has brought up the idea of hiring him. I wouldn't want him in Detroit, either, but I'm also not sold on him being a great GM. I think the Oil goofed in hiring him.

Agree about Watson. If we were looking for just a fill in, I like Bruce Boudreau but he's also 69 and I'm not sure he'd want anything. Maybe Hakstol.

Someone that shows some semblance of grit, passion and a WANT TO WIN

I'm not even convinced this organization cares that much about losing, it sure doesn't feel that way outside of Larkin and a couple others

Watson is developing kids in GR, he should be our next couch in couple of years. You can't blame Lalonde for Chiarot scoring in his own net

Watson definitely is the future Red Wings coach but i think he's gonna spent few more years in GR and maybe couple more as assistant or associate coach like Boughner.

But in the meantime if coaching change was imminent, i would hire Todd Nelson. B2B Calder cup champion and coached GR to the Calder cup as well. And the fun fact is that he also has a Calder cup win as a player and as a assistant coach. I think he has played AHL through already but no real chance in NHL yet.

I would hire him over Coach Q, BBQ Bruce or any of the other has beens.

Blashill and Laldone were both NHL rookie head coaches and failed. I don't think a 3rd rookie NHL head coach is the way to go.

Yzerman needs to hire a head coach with real NHL pedigree.

I don't blame Lalonde for the defense personnel. But this team in other areas just looks unprepared at the drop of the puck so many times. Just no urgency from the team.

They are stuck in preseason or something.

I know who I want because he's best available and says he's eager to back to coaching, but I doubt Yzerman wants the stigma around the brand.

Joel Quenneville.
Unless he's desperate for anyone to hire him, I doubt Quenneville would want to coach this team currently. Yes, it's an original six team and Yzerman is a big name, but there's too many holes and question marks.

We still don't know what happened there, but we are putting stamps .

We know that Quenneville was uncooperative about the investigation, lied about when he found out about Aldrich. Doubled down on that lie even when multiple people put him at the meeting where it was discussed and he "didn't want it to be a distraction." He wrote a couple good employee reviews for Aldrich after the allegations.

He did nothing to protect one of his players from one of his predatory coaches. He does not deserve to be an NHL coach any longer.
