Not sure Chiarot gets a 1st rounder. I think most fans outside of Montreal feel the same so what about this price? Some will still choke on this but I bet this is the kind of return the Habs get for Chiarot in the end.

* Chiarot (50% retention)
for
* 2023 2nd
* 2024 2nd
* B+ prospect developing well drafted 1-3 years ago (similar to what the Habs got for Toffoli... Heineman)
* Possible cap dump that expires this season

I'd remove the prospect and it looks about right
You do realize you have to pay the Habs to take a cap dump AND retain on Chiarot right? That alone costs you a 2nd.

Chiarot's value is a lot higher than a late 2nd

Two 2nd's was what I had in mind before the media brought out the "possible 1st". I think the two 2nd's is the base that many teams would offer and the B+ prospect added on top is how you get him over the other teams in on him.

And my approach is I want a 2nd in 23 and a 2nd in 24. Habs already have 12 picks in this next draft which is high.

Yeah I didn't read the cap dump part. Take out that too then.

I think Chiraot will get 2 2nds just like Brendan Dillon did 2 years ago. Both expiring, complimentary top-4 dmen.

The expiring cap dump is only there in case a team wants to add Chiarot but has no cap space. I'm not taking a cap dumb beyond this season and if it's forced on us, the value of the futures gets altered.

I get your Dillon comparison but there is just too much interest in Chiarot from his playoff performances over the last two years. Chiarot has played 23-25 min a game while Dillon played 18 min a game in the seasons before he was traded. Even less in the playoffs.

Chiarot is a ot better than Brendan Dillon, and excels come playoffs time when refs do't use their whistle as much.

Still too much.

it’s more along the lines of a 2nd/3rd+pick/ prospect
No it isn't, see trades of Savard (1st +), Dillon ( 2 x 2nds, and Chiarot is a WAY bettr dman), and more.

Not because some fans enjoy dman who put up 50pts in a season that GM like them. 50pts dman suck come playoffs time when you can cross check, hook and injure other teams player a lot more

Statistically there’s actually more penaltys in the playoffs fyi. Common misconception

Chiarot is certainly not any more effective than Dillon in terms of on ice results the past three years. Sure he can play heavier minutes…to poor effect.

Now I’ll grant that Chiarot is extremely over-utilized past his abilities due to structural issues with the Habs blueline, particularly this year but really during his entire tenure in Montreal. And if he goes from a 22-24 minute top pairing situation on a bad team to an 18-19 minute #4 defenseman on a decent team (a role he should be in), I would expect his results and the quality of his minutes to improve as the duration and importance of his minutes declines. Along with his heavy game I see him being a positive addition to a contending team so long as he is utilized properly.

The question is simply price compared to the Dillon’s, Soucy’s, etc of the world. Because that will be his role on a good team looking to acquire him. I’m not predicting one way or another if he can get what Habs fans want versus what other fans think he is worth. GMs do crazy things at the deadline but each deadline is a different environment. Past precedent can often prove useless.

You already have Chiarot at 50%, so no team should be required to give up anything worth a B+ prospect in order to free up under 2M for a rental defenseman. There was a lot of interest in Dillon too, who also played well on a team that went on a deep run the seaosn before he was traded. Either way, they're both physical, complimentary LHD, seen as playoff rentals.

I get your angle but a defenseman who has played 23-25 min a game is not the same as a guy who plays 16-18 min. The values are different and even if Dillon had interest, it's not the same interest Chiarot is getting this deadline (like it or not).

A team like Tampa (if they trade for Chiarot) would need both the retention and cap dump going the other way. There are others who are tight against the cap. Flames would be another. It's just there to notify all teams that if they need the cap to be addressed, we can help
