Dubas was a self-proclaimed Analytics guy. Tulsky created Corsi as a measurement and has a Harvard Physics/Chemistry degree and a PHD in Chemistry from UC Berkley (probably the top public university in the United States). I'm sure he has a pretty deep understanding of the flaws of stats. Dubas was an analytics guy in the sense of most people here who embrace analytics in that they know how to read them, but good luck getting them to figure out how to create and change inputs on a mass scale or create new measurements.
Chemistry is not pro hockey. It would be preferable if he had experience actually playing the game.

Contract negotiations are very different from statistical analysis.

Tulsky didn’t invent Corsi. It’s a massively overused statistic anyway. The Florida Panthers have horrible Corsi numbers and they keep winning because they score big goals and Bob makes big saves.

Inevitable that we'll yo-yo to a veteran GM after things fell apart with neophyte Dubas. These things tend to go in cycles like that, like when they went from JFJ to Burke.

I'm a little nervous about going to one of the retreads with "experience," but I do think this is an occasion where we need a seasoned pro to get the next contracts for the core guys right this time.

Armstrong signs 5-year deal with Blues

New contract will make Doug Armstrong the longest-tenured GM in Blues history

by Chris Pinkert / St. Louis Blues

September 25, 2021

Doug Armstrong will serve as the St. Louis Blues' President of Hockey Operations and General Manager for the foreseeable future after signing a five-year deal on Saturday.

The contract makes Armstrong - who was originally named general manager of the Blues in July 2010 - the longest-tenured general manager in franchise history.

"I got here in 2008, the first couple of years as (Vice President) of Player Personnel," Armstrong told stlouisblues.com. "As manager, you never know how long you'll last in these jobs, sometimes they're a little fickle. It's been an honor to have been the manager for the Blues for this long and I look forward to continuing that."

Under Armstrong, the Blues have qualified for the postseason in nine of the last 10 seasons, won three division titles, and claimed the first Stanley Cup in franchise history in 2019. Since taking over the general manager duties in 2010, Armstrong has recorded the highest regular-season point total in the Western Conference.

It’s not always easy to find a general manager with experience. Though at least two hockey analysts have hinted that Doug Armstrong, an Ontario native also serving as GM for Canada’s squad in the IIHF World Championship, could be a strong fit.

James Mirtle, a senior content producer for The Athletic NHL, was among the first to suggest the Leafs could pursue Armstrong. Sportsnet hockey insider Elliotte Friedman also noted a possible link between the Maple Leafs and Armstrong in a podcast.

In any case this would be considered, the Maple Leafs and Blues would need to reach some sort of agreement. For one, the Blues would likely seek some compensation after signing Armstrong to a lengthy contract extension just two years ago. Also, there would probably be certain parameters set for the offseason approaches with the Blues and Leafs to prevent collusion.

The Blues have actually dealt with a situation like this themselves, but it was decades ago and on the receiving end. St. Louis was ordered to pay a $250,000 fine after negotiating to bring on Mike Keenan as a general manager and coach of the Blues. The Blues also ended up trading forward Petr Nedved to the New York Rangers as part of the settlement, while Keenan also paid tens of thousands in fines to the Rangers and the NHL.

Different times and different circumstances, but perhaps something similar would need to happen from the Leafs end if they intend to split Armstrong from the Blues.

The other stipulation that would need to be ironed out is Armstrong’s exact role with the Maple Leafs. Armstrong also holds the title of President of Hockey Operations with the Blues. Right now, former Blues forward Brendan Shanahan holds that role with the Maple Leafs and, in theory, could have more power over Toronto roster decisions than Armstrong without any changes.

Armstrong, coming off a frustrating Blues season, reiterated several times that he didn’t want St. Louis to fall into a complete “rebuild” mode like struggling teams in the Chicago Blackhawks and Columbus Blue Jackets. However, he ended up trading longtime stars and two pending free agents, Vladimir Tarasenko and Ryan O’Reilly, weeks before the trade deadline, alluding to a time of transition for the franchise.

The 58-year-old admitted in his first offseason presser that this season was the most disconnected he felt with players within the organization.

“It’s my job to get it more,” said Armstrong on April 16. “My summer project, is to work with people to find out how do you get to these guys, what makes them tick?”

Armstrong has yet to publicly comment on rumors that link him to Toronto. He is currently on a five-year deal with the Blues that would allow him to hold office through 2026.

Prior to joining the Blues, Armstrong he spent 16 years with the Dallas Stars, winning a Stanley Cup as assistant general manager in 1999.

Friedman reports that there was a lot of shock within the Leafs organization following the news that Dubas would not be returning as general manager.

"On Wednesday, there was a big meeting between the coaches, some of the executives about how to make the team better and Dubas was there and he was running it." Friedman said. "I think a lot of people thought that was for sure a sign staying."

"One thing I had heard that Dubas had proposed was streamlining the decision-making process of the organization. I don't necessarily mean think that means that he was going to cut out Shanahan or anything like that. But I heard that he found that it was too slow like it was Dubas, Shanahan, the board then come all the way back down, and I did hear he proposed something where they could try to do this stuff a lot faster."

Former Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving has received permission to talk to both Toronto and Pittsburgh for their vacant position, Sportsnet's Eric Francis reported.

When it comes to what the Leafs want in their next general manager, Friedman said it's someone who isn't shy about making the tough calls.

"They are looking for a GM with some bite, a GM who won't be afraid to make decisions," Friedman explained. "There are some big decisions to make that they have coming up. It doesn't appear likely that Auston Matthews will sign by July 1, that's not their only concern but it's one of their biggest things that they will have to navigate."

For those who want Stan Bowman.

Let me remind you of some of his masterful recent moves.

Since 2016

Traded Artemi Panarin + Tyler Motte + 6th for Brandon Saad + Michael Paliota and a 6th.
Traded Teuvo Teravainen + Bryan Bickell for a 2nd and 3rd
Traded Brandon Saad for Zadorov
Traded Philip Danault + 2nd (Alexander Romanov) for Dale Weise and Thomas Fleischmann.
Traded Adam Boqvist, 2 1sts (Jiricek, Sillinger), and 2nd (Heimosalmi) for Seth Jones + 31st (Allen)
Signed Seth Jones for 8 years 9.5 million.
Acquiring Shaw for a 2nd, 3rd, 4th
And the list goes on of awful trades, and moves.

Yea I get that he won some cups, but guy has been awful since 2015. + the Kyle beach shit show, I would stay away from him with a 10 foot pole.

Feel like shanahan already has someone in mind. Its why he was comfortable leaving dubas.

He even tipped his hat in the conference saying he started exploring other options after monday and by Thursday he already decided.

No ide who it is but I think its someone we dont expect

the easy choice is Pridham.

Brad Treliving is another possibility.

everyone else is probably a long shot.

bowman was awful in his last few seasons in Chicago. Tulsky is a pure stats guy. Probably good at player assessment but there’s no evidence he has any business experience and no experience playing professional hockey. In my mind he’s a fantastic assistant GM but im not sure how involved he was with contract negotiations or cap management for the Canes.

I’d like McPhee to build me Vegas. Instead of Eichel, it’s Matthews. Thank you.
Imagine McPhee really came in and pretty much cleaned house except for Sammy, Woll, Reilly, Gio(cheap), Lilly, McCabe(cheap), Schenn, AM, Lafferty , Acciari and Knies. Then the team went on to the Cup Finals.

I admit I didn't know who Tulsky was until recently, but I'm okay with it:laugh:

I was thinking Pridham, but Shanny mentioned they want experience. To me, that practically screams Treliving or Bowman....but neither will be available quickly enough...?

Plan B? Or Plan BBBB?

(Brian Burke / Bruce Boudreau)

I'd prefer we steer well clear of the mess that is Bowman/Quenneville.

To be fair if we’re going to list bad contracts and trades Dubas has his fair share.

if reports are true…feels like Dubas did what a bunch of my contractor friends do when they don’t really want a job. Throw out a stupid number. If they agree. Cool.
Do your contractor friends then email the client outside of business hours to plead for the job? Unless they do don't really see the similarity.
