Exactly. Focusing on point totals to compare to previous years to draw conclusions is such faulty reasoning. You have to compare how those totals compare to the current year's peers.

That's like saying someone who won the scoring title with 110 points with no one else scoring 90 points isn't really that impressive because the previous year 5 guys scored 120 points.

Very glad at least someone gets it.

It's strange that it's gonna go to Jordan Staal. Great final but did nothing first three rounds.
That's only if you consider points. Staal routinely takes on the toughest matchup for the other team with intention to completely shut them down. The only series where you can question that is the Finals (and lets be honest, he's had Eichel in hell this series) and he's made up for it by being more than a goal per game player.

When you consider full body of work, giving it to Staal should the Canes win makes a lot of sense.

I would have no problem if Marner get Smythe regardless of series outcome.

If Vegas wins, then I will be too pissed off to give a damn about any lesser award.

When Carolina wins, who cares? Stanley Cup daddy-o!

I agree with this take. I simply pointed out points to the 'Staal would be the lowest point total forward to win it' crowd.

If you're going to compare years like that, do it both ways.

Wait until you find out that the Conn Smythe award is about the entire playoffs, it's going to blow your mind.

Yes, but it's never been presented that way. Otherwise you could have players who lost in the Conference Finals be awarded MVP.

The same way these exact writers who vote for the Hart punish players who's team misses the playoffs when it comes to the Hart. As much as it's an MVP reward for the season/playoffs - it's always questioned how you can be the MVP of the playoffs without winning when a winning team has no MVP.

People are punishing Carolina for playing less games here and winning games by scoring less. Marner hasn't been more important for Vegas than anyone has been for Carolina.
