In my ideal world, Staal takes Hjalmarsson's contract.

But he'll be looking at 6 mill +.

Not a fan of that number. At all.

Me neither. Someone like McD could command 6 mil plus, but actually be deserving of it. Can't believe we have him at a bargain 4.7 mil for the next 6 years.

No way I pay Staal 6 mil plus.

Then regardless of what happens this year, we need to move him.. prerferably for a center.

I agree, I see him getting more than Girardi no question.. and Mcdonagh is clearly this team's #1.

The problem is that he isn't our #1. We can't pay him like a #1. It's great depth to have, but is it fair to expect him to take a paycut AND play on the 2nd pair? Hjalmarsson probably took that paycut because he won 2 cups with the Hawks. We won't be winning any cups with having our top 4 D commanding 20 million+ unless they're a generationally talented group. I'd have no issue with that if our D had any offense that wasn't McDonagh.

This post made a lot of sense and included plenty of compelling arguments as to why we drafted poorly. Good going.

How'd my post not make sense? Maybe you were raised thinking mediocrity is acceptable... when it comes to drafting, either you make good picks--i.e., ones that make your team a REAL contender (this season was an anomaly--us getting as far as we did) ones that are not good enough.

Think of it this way... winning = good, not winning = bad. Stemming from that is the concept that if you draft pretty well, but not good enough to ice a really good roster, you are NOT GOOD AT DRAFTING/DEVELOPING PROSPECTS. Most players will flop, but this team has a higher percentage of blow drafts than other teams.

I'd say more, but you're just going to tell me I don't make sense.

I feel like you're missing the most obvious target.

You make some good points, but doesn't his massive injury history concern you? I'm leery about a guy who has missed an average of 20-ish games a season the past 7 seasons...

2007-08: missed 31 games
2008-09: missed 27 games
2009-10: missed 9 games
2010-11: missed 31 games and all 12 playoff games
2011-12: missed 25 games
2012-13: missed 6 games
2013-14: missed 9 games and first 4 playoff games

... especially when he averages 8 goals a season over his 9-season career, with a career high of 12. He has upsides, to be sure. But he is a double-edged sword and there are reasons he stays off a lot of radars.

I don't find myself overly concerned that a potential low-key 3rd line center signing could miss a number of games, no.

I get why ROR looks attractive, I just don't like the idea of a guy who has held his team hostage over salary (twice now, I think, but I could be wrong) in a young impressionable locker room like ours.

If anything, the character in our locker room (young players included) would help ROR much more than ROR would negatively affect our young core.

I've been ROR or bust since the playoffs ended.

I am, however, starting to warm to the idea of Thornton or Spezza.

My priority would be:

1 O'Reilly
2 Thornton
3 Spezza
4 Kadri
5 Roy (if we strike out and Miller isn't ready and we need to go with three 2C's.

The injuries bug me, but different strokes. On sheer eye test, he is about as good a 3C as you'll find, so I can buy into your rationale. Frankly, I don't have a better solution than you (or anyone in here) since I believe we only have one active center signed. Without knowing what the team's intentions are or what they have working right now, there are way too many holes for me to guess at.

How about we don't sign another poor-skating center (with other valuable traits, granted) who is almost 30 for long-term and big $$$?

What is this, Brad Richards v2.0? Being able to skate is a huge factor ESPECIALLY for a dude who's exiting his prime.

If we're trading Staal, I want a package return of Kadri+. Then I'd call up Buffalo to see what they want for Ehrhoff. 4M cap hit, and he played very well under AV. Definitely would boost our power play and possession as well

So far we have drafted one top six player in the last 8 years in the 1st round and that's Kreider. Definition of a team that has not done well in the 1st round sugar coat it anyway u want there's a reason Sather always goes trades or FA... I'll give u Cherapanov so 2.. and the mcilrath pick was a bust as soon as they said his name for a #10 overall. Let him prove me wrong please and I'll gladly admiti was wrong

THIS.

McIlrath is not a bad player, but a player with his assets can be acquired in the 3rd round. We wasted our only top10 pick in 10 years for a goon.

Grabovski @ 2 years for 4.2M per Year >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Stastny @ 7 Years for 6.75M per year.

and you know both those are realistic contracts.

numbers are about right other than the 2 for years on Grabo

He will get more than 2 years, I think

Is Marcel Goc a good player anymore? He looked downright awful on the Penguins.

When healthy, yes. With the Pens, he missed the tail end of the season and start of the playoffs with an injury, and who knows if he was 100 percent in the playoffs when he came back. Main issue is, he's just injured a lot. He's been out like 15 different times in the past 7 seasons, including what is likely two concussions, and I believe he's missed close to 160 games. Other than that, he's a really, really good 3rd center. He can also usually be snagged to a good cap hit and term, largely due to the injury history.

He looked terrible for the Pens before he got hurt too. At what point are you worried about injury problems catching up to a 30 year old? Powe was younger, but I feel like we're looking at a similar situation.

I saw more of him on Florida this year and liked what I saw and when I did see him on Pitt Bylsma was seriously misusing him. Personally, I'm already worried about the injury issues and it wasn't my call to go after him. Were it not for injury history, I'd be all for it though. He does a whole lot of little things well when used in the right role.
