For the 3rd straight year I'm putting up a poll asking fans who they think will lead the team in points, as well as which rookie will have the best campaign. So far we've been good at predicting the leading scorer, bad at the best rookie campaign (Particularly in preseason 2016 when everyone chose Vesey and Buchnevich over Skjei)

With AV player handling, it'll be Zuccarello.

If Quinn gives our best scorers the most ice time, I think it comes down to Zibanejad and Buchnevich.

If Buchnevich plays more than 4th line minutes at ES, he could compete with Zib.

Still feel like its Zib if he stays healthy

I think Zib plays 60-65 games and Zucc gets traded

Buch with 57 (19+38)

Zib with about 50 in 60-65 games

Zucc on pace for 68 when traded

Zucc or ZBad may lead the team regardless of usage. Buch will only have a chance if he is on a line with ZBad and Kreider all year.

I never understood AV's insistence to spread around ice time so much. Most of the good teams in the NHL don't do that.

Ice time should go:

Zibanejad: 20
Zuccarello: 19
Hayes: 18:30
Kreider: 18
Buchnevich: 18

Lets now compute that to a 60 minute game. Hayes and Zibanejad end up taking 38:30 of the 60 minutes. Give 15 minutes to whatever rookie, Chytil or Andersson, is the other center. We are at 53:30, and then you give 6 minutes to Holland or Nieves. Why do guys who aren't really even quality NHL'ers need like 10-11 minutes?

This is one of the main reasons we never have players surpass around 60 points.

Are you really suggesting playing 2 lines for 2/3 of the game? What is this?

Giving the top two lines 2/3 of the ice time seems like a good strategy to me. I would probably ideally give the 4th line like two shifts/period and then PK time and then heavily lean on the guys who actually score for the bulk of the ice time.

I see no reason to ever give the 4th line 10 mins/game under normal circumstances.

I think coaches have actually become a lot worse with their allocation of ice time in recent years.

Gonna guess one of Kredier, Zibanejad, or Buchnevich. We seriously need someone to turn into a 60+ point player that we can rely on to give heavier minutes. None of our drafted guys since Sather have ever broken 60 points, and the only ones in the last three years to do so are Nash, Brassard, and Zucc since our run to the Cup. Zucc has come close with 59 points, and Stepan and Nash were pacing for it in the lockout shortened season.

We need to see one develop out of the next core of players.

One would hope it would be Zibanejad but one would also hope that we could at least get a couple players at or above the 60 point range. That's kind of important too. If someone could get to 70 that would be hallelujah time.

Realistically Zucc but obviously if health isn't an issue Buch or Zibby.

Are you really suggesting the Isles are spending 15% of their cap space on 10 minutes a game? I think a real GM knows what hes doing.

Went with Zibanejad.

Could see it being Buchnevich. Zuccarello won't be here beyond the TDL so unless he's got access to some super duper Mario brother mushrooms to incorporate into his diet, he won't be posting a career year at age 31 on this team after showing significant signs of decline last year.

I think the Islanders have no idea what they are doing and that outside of the draft the Islanders had the worst offseason in the NHL - even if you disregard the fact that they lost Tavares. I think Lou is a bad GM who has a good reputation largely due to the play of Martin Brodeur.

53 points last season is pretty good, with all those line changes and little chemistry between players. Unfortunately Zucc is the only player on the current team who shows up 100% in every game, and that has to be fixed. He's the last guy you should worry about, with skilled linemates he should reach at least 70 points.

With everyone healthy and nobody traded I could see something like the following:

Zibanejad: 70 (PP1)
Zuccarello: 60 (PP1)
Buchnevich: 60 (PP1)
Kreider: 60 (PP1)
Shattenkirk: 50 (PP1)
Hayes: 50 (PP2)
Spooner: 50 (limited PP2)
Namestnikov: 40 (No PP time)
Chytil: 40 (limited PP2)
Andersson: 40 (PP2)
DeAngelo: 40 (PP2QB)
Pionk: 30 (PP2 shooter)
Fast: 30 (Spot duty with KZ 5v5, limited PP2)
Skjei: 20 (No PP time)
Vesey: 20
Smith: 20
Staal: 10
Non-regulars: 30

Imagined regular lineup:

Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich (35%)
Namestnikov-Hayes-Zuccarello (30%)
Andersson-Chytil-Spooner (25%)
Vesey-NR-Fast (10%)

Staal-Shattenkirk (36%)
Skjei-DeAngelo (34%)
Smith-Pionk (30%)

670 points = 251 goals, which would have been an above average offensive team in 2017-18.
