I think IF we’re getting Brayden Schenn, the deal will need to involve a third team to eat salary for a mid round pick. Adding him for 3 years at 3.25M would be quite nice, but the total cost could be prohibitive.

Obviously it all depends on what you can get St Louis down to in terms of trade cost.

It is certainly possible our assets would be better served on a different target.

Woops, I meant to put that at 25% retention. I agree they wouldn’t eat 50% but maybe 25%. Hard to know we’ve seen some oddly cheap retention (although yes admittedly it’s usually 1 year)

In that case you are still asking a team to eat 5-6M and use a retention spot for 3 1/2 years for just a mid round pick.
That would cost more than a mid round pick imo

It can’t be that much. The Blues would have to retain 50% and take Kampf or Domi

What's been reported is they want the equivalent of 2 1sts. It is utter madness, you're doing the Blues a favor by getting them out from under that contract.
The Leafs have to look elsewhere. Coyle or Gourde would be better fits.

If you're into reuniting brothers, what about Brandon Tanev?

I don’t understand the fascination with bringing in Luke Schenn for a third go round.

He’s a mediocre defenseman and was essentially unwanted and out of hockey the last time Toronto traded for him.

There’s so many better options for a defenseman.
