I don't think Cossa is going to be put in a challenging situation next season when we have two goalies capable of meeting the league average for quality starts. If Talbot retires that could change, but I expect Yzerman to take a page out of Ken Holland's playbook and let Cossa ripen in Grand Rapids next season. You've followed the Red Wings for a long time, I'm not sure why this is a difficult concept to grasp.

What if Yzerman pencils in Cossa as a starter next season and he ends up s**tting the bed? Have we seen this movie before? Ville Husso was flat out bad in 2022-23 and 2023-24. James Reimer was horrific in 2024-25. What if the Red Wings did what you suggested when the Mrazek trade was announced, and instead rolled with a 38 year old Talbot and a rookie who ended up s**tting himself on a nightly basis? What if Talbot gets injured? As you point out, he'll be 38. What then?

I've said I think the reason they traded for Mrazek is because Alex Lyon, who has provided replacement level quality, looks like he's told Yzerman he's gonna take a run at free agency this summer. So Yzerman locked in a similar quality goalie who is under contract for one more season. He has two very average NHL goalies signed for next season which allows Cossa to spend one more year in GR and Augustine one more year in East Lansing. If they need to bring Cossa up they can and probably will, but I don't think they're pencilling him in and expecting 30ish starts from him.

The goalie situation is pretty much a clean slate in 2026-27 when Cossa will be 24. He'll have three seasons of AHL play, with hopefully next season featuring Cossa getting 60ish starts as the true #1. That will give us a much better feel for his trajectory.

You may not like that, but I suspect that's the plan. Cossa is going to be brought along slowly due to the fact the Red Wings have two average NHL level goalies signed for next season.
How many games do you think Cossa plays next year in the NHL? Are you really expecting 0?

I think it is pretty likely he sees like 10-20 games (at least), when you factor in the ages of Talbot/Mrazek. I think it’s pretty likely one of those guys gets an injury and miss some time or might go through a stretch where they struggle.

I guess I don’t think Talbot/Mrazek is some bulletproof goalie tandem like you, but rather pretty much the opposite.

I get that you think Cossa is ready, but if you're wrong it fortunately means absolutely nothing. If Yzerman is wrong, it sets the team back with yet another playoff miss. Surely you can understand the stakes here, yeah?
lol, you mean what is happening right now, regardless?

If anything this home stretch should tell us we don’t have “the guy” in net for next year already on the roster.

I want the Detroit Red Wings to have their best chance at success. I've applauded the decision to give our best draft picks to Hakan Andersson, because he has a long and successful track record with drafting good hockey players. And hey, it's working.
Before several drafts in the past....

Me: "I dunno about this European kid. He seems to lack upside"
Hakan Andersson: "I love this kid, he has huge upside"
Me: "I love this kid, he has huge upside!"

Your posting is truly weird, I said in my last response to you that I expect Cossa to get some starts in Detroit next season:

Cam Talbot has 40 or more starts in three of the last 4 seasons, Mrazek has been right around 40 starts for 3 straight seasons (133 starts over the past 3 seasons). They seem capable of splitting the starts and giving us bang average goaltending. Cossa has a career high of 40 starts in Grand Rapids, so I really have no idea what you are going on about.

Well I was genuinely wondering because you said in a previous post we have no one knocking on the door.

None of these guys are pushing their way into the conversation on a team that is crying out for skill and quality.

I think Cossa is doing exactly that.

I think Cossa is doing more than that.
This is going absolutely nowhere, so here's my last post on the topic summarizing everything I've said thus far.
  • Yzerman has two NHL goaltenders under contract next season with a long history indicating they are capable of splitting the net next season and providing average goaltending.
  • After next season the Red Wings will have zero goaltenders under contract with any real NHL experience.
  • Sebastian Cossa will have a shot to claim the #1 spot in Detroit in 2026-27 after he's spent 3 years in the AHL, with hopefully the third year being his first season of owning the net in Grand Rapids to the tune of 60 or so starts.

I don't disagree with anything there.

How good would Cossa have to become for you to feel better about our NA scouting? Or what would need to happen over the next 1-2 seasons for you to feel better about the NA scouting?
