Who to sign to change the DNA?

We were 1 game away from beating the B2B cup champs, have Matthews signed for 3 years and have no first rounders for the next 3 years

There is no build through the draft. The Leafs must buy players who can win now because the window is coming to a close very, very quickly
We literally just built through the draft.

Matthews 1st Oa
Marner 4th overall
Rielly 5th overall
Nylander 8th overall
Knies 57th overall
Woll 62nd
Robertson 53rd
Holmberg 156th

That's quite a few draft picks playing. I agree. We are still very much in win now mode.

Likely without Marner.

But we blew it. The primary asset to get a good return with is leaving for nothing. JT is an old man for hockey. Tanev is an old man. Stolarz is up there. Rielly kinda sucks now and is getting old.

It's kinda over. Edmonton has one last kick at it and then they are cooked too but atleast they made it twice.

The way Kypreos and other were talking, the Leafs are very interested. If Marchand wants money, he will walk and the Leafs can offer him an extra year to seal the deal.
At this point it's insanity to keep doing this. Every season they change out depth guys. They have changed the goalies multiple times, changed coaches. The result is the same. Matthews is now a winner and at this point it feels like he's damaged goods.

I was responding to a post suggesting the Leafs should now build through the draft. Our core has come from the draft, but we cannot round the roster out that way at this point in time given the Matthews contract and the lack of picks

We need to make smart FA adds, our pro scouting has to earn their money

If Leafs re-sign Tavares, which seems likely, they really only have to replace around the 30-31 goals that marner produces.

The thing is with or without marner, if Matthews isn't healthy it doesn't matter.
If Matthews is healthy, they need to replace the passes marner makes to him. Matthews scores the goals.

Tavares and Nylander are the other 2 goal scorers on the team.

Granlund might be the only available distributor on the market, who could help fill the marner void.

I've come up with a Brilliant new plan to re-invest the recaptured Marner cap space.

Treliving should offersheet Edmonton RFA dman 25 year old Evan Bouchard to a 7 year $11 mil offer. Oilers only have $11 mil total free cap space at present.

Having him run the point on the PP instead of Marner or Reilly would make the Leafs PP deadly.

Here are the 2025-26 draft pick compensations.

We have like no picks let alone our own picks. We're the furthest team with a threat of offering a an offersheet to someone. Honestly, I feel like I should take this post as sarcasm because we're so far away from this capability but I'm really not sure right now tbh lol.

"Defence wins championships".... suggests signing someone who plays D but is terrible at it... makes sense.

Also, literally can't do your plan.

The Leafs don’t have their own next 2 1st round picks and 2nd.

I'll tell you one place to start and it's the 4th line. Why? Because it's easier to start there and easier to fix that.

The 4th line should have 3 players who are fast, physical, and can actually chip in goals - playoff goals. Like what Florida had. Also they should have a beard. If they aren't fast, physical, tenacious on the boards, with beards, and don't contribute any offence they should not be on the Leafs 4th line come playoff time.

There’s a thread about the bleak future for this team.

The Leafs don’t have their own next 2 1st round picks and 2nd.
7x11 is 4 firsts anyways.

If you want to change the DNA it starts with the Knies negotiation. If you lose another RFA negotiation just fold the team. And don't go nuts on July 1st. yeah the idea of adding marchand or bennett is exciting, except you're not getting pending UFA bennett, you're getting the next 7 years at twice the price, It will be a disaster. Get some reclaimation projects on 1 year deals. Make Matthews and Nylander carry this team and swing way bigger next summer.

It's good that you can see this with Bouchard because the advanced stats attempt to say otherwise.
