Who to sign to change the DNA?

Looking forward to seeing what Matthews can do without Marner attached to his right hip. Matthews has looked much better when he does not have to defer to the best playmaker ever to lace up skates.
We actually lose way more games when Matty is without Marner even if his point totals some how are improved, which I doubt..

What to do to change the DNA and leadership core of this team?

Would convincing Reilly to accept a trade? Maybe Detroit (for his bride's family) or to his hometown, Vancouver?
Frees up money to throw at Ekblad. 7 x 8 mill

Sign Brad Marchand, maybe 3 x 7 mill.
Would change the leadership core, by removing Reilly, and adding a winner and a warrior. Would also have a profound effect on the development of Easton Cowan.

Resign Taveras. 4 x 7 mill.
We all know he is still a good hockey player, and is the best 2nd line center available. Line with Marchand and Nylander.

Bring back Downtown Connor Brown. 2 x 2 mill
Be a solid third line RW that can play up and down the lineup.

So that would be $24 mill out, (Reilly, Marner, reduction of JT salary) and $24 mill in. And then add Kniess on a bridge at say 6 mill

Kneiss Matthew McMann
Marchand JT Nylander
Cowan Domi Brown
Lorentz Laughton xx

Patches

Carlo Ekblad
McCabe Tanev
Benoit OEL

You could flip OEL and Carlo,

Just having fun, but thoughts??

Mitch Marner was not the entire problem here, he was one part of the DNA. So when Tre talks about changing it, are you also changing the remaining leadership in Matthews/Tavares/Nylander/Rielly? They have as much responsibility for losing as Marner.

So are we back to looking for 1 or 2 players to put around them to change the fortunes like we’ve done for 9 years.
When changing out Marner, the question is do you believe in the other 4?

The top players were the top producers, year after year after year after year ...

Problem was there was no money left for other top 6 forwards signings.
Their draft success was Knies, Holmberg, Robertson, Liljegren, Durzi and Sandin since 2017.

Zero depth.

Knies was a homerun, Sandin was a good pick, Liljegren is unknown.

I've seen Jeannot mentioned a couple times.....I mean for cheap he could be an interesting add. It's too bad Reaves didn't work out last year. I still think you need a guy like that, even in a part time role. Or is Jeannot damaged goods now? Columbus just resigned Olivier, Rempe extended, plus you have players like Pezetta and Xhfiejadfl in Montreal. Or just hope Reaves bounces back (unlikely) for his last year?? Regardless....need a player like this in some shape or form - Florida has Gadjovich and was a regular in the playoffs (by no means is a heavyweight).

I think Tavares will resign..... Duchesne just signed 4 yrs/18M in Dallas (yes I know...no taxes). So where does JT come in.....5M/yr???? Maybe sign Knies to a bridge in the 5-6/yr range, and that still leaves Marner's hit, plus the increase. Also, resign Lorentz.

Maybe Connor Brown as depth option...seems like he found his game again.

I really think Ekblad will resign with Florida, same as Bennett.

Marchand I would take for sure, depending on what kind of deal he is looking at.

A couple other names that are intriguing are Boeser (not sure how much of a playoff guy, get it done type of he is), and Brandon Saad (same as Boeser). Maybe a Ryan Lindgren on D (for the right price of course). Lastly of course we have to mention Brandon Tanev (although doesn't seem like much of contributor come playoffs in terms of offense).......could be interesting to have the bothers together.

I wonder if the Panthers or anyone else in the NHL lets Nylander go out post game no shirt on, over and over again. Nylander, best stretch of hockey was when he had no extension for the first 40 games 2 seasons ago, havent seen that guy since the day he signed. Nylander is a gutless playoff performer.

Do we they?

Just asking, I don't have the data to support or refute that.
45-25-2 without Matthews (104 points per 82 games, slightly worse than this season's result)
21-17-5 without Marner (89 points per 82 games, misses the playoffs this year)

Next year he is going slicked back with gold chain and a beater on. Heard it here first.

This is since Matthews was drafted, right?

I'm sure Matthews was playing hurt ... odds are about 50-50?

So the team plays better without Matthews?

Trade Matthews and re-sign marner?

But I've been told you cannot win any trade that involves Matthews.
Doesn't this refute that?

Mc David has to know that Leafs would move mountains and split the Red Sea to sign him in a years time.

They missed on Gretzky because as then owner Stavros said, if it was reported correctly "and how many seats is he going to fill"? He was right of course, but, it still would have been Waynes and hockey fans dreams to see him in Toronto,

McDavid may be that guy now.

Boeser - 23 points in 29 games.
Saad - 57 points in 111 games.

Losing Matthews or Marner can't possibly improve the club unless there is new talent added. A club plays differently when a star player isn't there. Desperate and short term because teams rely on their stars. That really suggests that the team has more game but are letting 34 carry the weight. Or maybe the coach is?

Leafs are in trouble
They need to sign multiple free agents to replace all the holes

Jesus, you guys love your reheated soup. I say f*** the free agent market and try to build through the draft. This organization never learns. The worst thing to happen to this team was making the playoffs in the first year of the three amigos stint.

I'd get rid of Nylander first and foremost, but evidently he was shopped previously and there was zero interest. I wouldn't even sign Marner or Tavares and just simply save that cap space. This off seasons prized free agent signings are next off seasons prime buyout candidates. That Duchene deal is absolutely brutal. Dude was a ghost in the playoffs. GMs in this league never learn and need to be saved from themselves.

I’d make very minimal additions until these guys show they are going to buy in to the way Tre/Berube want them to play.
Otherwise we can try to get rid of them now and rebuild rather than delay it for 4/5 years of spinning our wheels.

No 1st round picks until 2028. Leafs are kind of stuck where they are until the fate of Matthews is known 2-3 years down the line.
