The whole rat thing is so crazy, how could you not love it?
A nasty (and to quote Billy Lindsay) “well fed” rat comes ambling into the locker room a few minutes before the team takes the ice, (according to Brian Skrudland) men “dressed in armor” who would “block a puck with their face” were “wetting their pants” and jumping up on benches skeeved out by it. Then Mellanby “one timed it” into the wall and into the next world. Then he goes out and scores two goals with rat hairs still stuck to his tape.... immortalized post game by the Beezer calling it the “rat trick”. Poof, A legend is born.
Soon afterwards someone threw a plastic rat onto the ice after a Panthers goal, lmao. I wonder who was the first to throw a rat....
All of this eventually leading to a secondary team mascot, Viktor E Rat.
