Thanks that's a pretty cool table! Did you also compile the actual players somewhere? I'd have fun just looking through that haha.
Montreal is allergic to forwards....

The fact that San Jose is ranked "top" in this table means that this metric doesn't really mean what it tries to mean...

A majority of their roster is from their own picks? If I had to guess about the others there must be a couple from the E.K trade playing in Ottawa, Pavelski, Thornton, Brendan Dillon and a couple less-known players.

Would be a lot of work to post them all but just with the Ducks example, 26 of 27 are their draft picks. If you Google 'Anaheim NHL draft history' should be able to find them.

Since San Jose has quite a few undrafted free agents will add a list of their 32 players in the table:

Barclay Goodrow (fa)
Charlie Coyle
Chris Tierney
Colin Blackwell
Dylan Gambrell
Frederik Handemark (fa)
Joe Pavelski
Joel Kellman (fa)
John Leonard
Josh Norris
Kevin Labanc
Logan Couture
Matthew Nieto
Michael Sgarbossa (fa)
Nick Bonino
Noah Gregor
Patrick Marleau
Ryan Carpenter (fa)
Sean Kuraly
Timo Meier
Tomas Hertl

Dylan Demelo
Jason Demers
Justin Braun
Marc Edouard Vlasic
Mario Ferraro
Matt Irwin (fa)
Matt Tennyson
Nikolai Knyzhov (fa)
Radim Simek (fa)

Carter Hutton (fa)
Thomas Greiss

In post #10 above I did list all of the undrafted free agents in the league at that time (Feb 2020), which may help.

Edit:

Here's the Habs list:

Alex Galchenyuk
Arturi Lekhonen
Brendan Gallagher
Daniel Carr (fa)
Jake Evans
Jesperi Kotkaniemi
Max Pacioretty

Alexander Romanov
Jarred Tinordi
Joel Hanley (fa)
Mikhail Sergachev
Nathan Beaulieu
PK Subban
Ryan McDonagh

Carey Price
Jaroslav Halak

(also can now add Victor Mete to the table)

Thanks that's very impressive! Did you automate the search, or do you have to manually pull that info out?

Crazy how Montreal managed to stay afloat despite that drafting, although that list of D looks pretty good... sad that they're all gone except Romanov (and Mete lol).

To explain the numbers, using Anaheim, there were 29 players originally drafted or signed by the Ducks (2 goaltenders, 13 dmen and 14 forwards). Those players combined last season for 200 NHL goals and 608 points. Th breakdown of those goals and points are 50/250 for dmen and 150/357 for forwards.

Note: both drafted and originally signed undrafted players included, goaltender assists also included in team point totals
Average points per player is interesting. Avalanche win by a landslide, 42, 6 with Tampa Bay in second with 35,8.

Copy the year end stats into a spreadsheet, add a column for who drafted each player and then sort by that column is basically what I do. Then use the sheet as a basis, updating it for the new season which is the real challenge as rosters are constantly changing. plan to redo completely once year end stats are available.

Habs measurable draft history currently is (fill in the blank). I try just to provide the numbers without comment. There's lots of draft analysis out there using different methods. The tables above are simple comparisons open to different interpretations.

Guess my general comment, from running these type numbers for many years, is I've seen the correlation between teams who consistently draft well and success on the ice.

Average points per player is interesting. Avalanche win by a landslide, 42, 6 with Tampa Bay in second with 35,8.
Quality over quantity I guess, they have both drafted some very gifted offensive players.

Thornton is a Boston 1st overall pick, Dillon is a Dallas (AFAIR) pick. A lot of their roster are FA signings from Europe in their early 20s.

Good catches! Completely forgot about Dillon and eh tbf Thornton has just been around for so long that I forgot his first career.

Made a comparison of first round draft picks by team who have played this season (including games of February 10, 2021).

To explain the numbers, 14 of Anaheim's own first round picks have played in the NHL in 2020-21 so far. Of those 14 players, 8 played with the Ducks, the rest with other teams. The 10 players (all 1sts column) represent the 1sts who have played with the Ducks this season (drafted by all teams).

To explain the table, using the Ducks as an example, 37 players drafted or originally signed by them played in the NHL in 2020-21 regular season (2 goaltenders+17 dmen+18 forwards). They combined for 155 goals and 446 points, broken down by dmen (39+172) and forwards (116+273).

Also included in the total points are goaltenders assists (40 total). At least all teams played the same number of games this season, albeit within their divisions.

Who drafted or originally signed the players on the 2021-22 NHL rosters? And how many of those players were with their original drafting/signing team?

To explain the numbers, using Anaheim, 28 players they drafted or originally signed made opening rosters. The breakdown of the 28 players was 15 forwards, 11 dmen and 2 goaltenders. Of the 28 players, 16 of those were on the Ducks opening roster.

The youngest player to make a roster was Mason McTavish, the oldest Zdeno Chara, both players with their original drafting team.

Posted this awhile ago on the Habs forum, may be of interest. Last season's stats traced back to the players draft round plus the undrafted players' numbers.

By my count 1008 different players played in an NHL game last season and scored 5022 goals and totalled 13542 points.

The above table breaks it down by round, added percentages of those totals.

I`ll use the 1st round to explain the numbers: 329 players (32.6 % of 1008) scored 2499 goals (49.8% of 5022) and totalled 6726 points (49.7 % of 13542) last season.

Gives a little idea of how teams value draft picks.

Overall, Habs are very weak. Thanks to Trevor Timmins and Bergevin.

Good they they had been kicked out recently.

Misc: By my count, there were 1,123 different players in the NHL this past season (119 goaltenders, 345 dmen and 659 forwards).

They scored 8,150 goals and totaled 21,978 points

170 players made their NHL debut (136 drafted players and 34 undrafted).

Was cool to see a full 82 game season again!

Edit: Games played and averages for the columns added 19 Dec 2022

The turnover; 123 players who played in a regular season game in 2020-21 did not appear in a game in 2021-22.
238 players played in 2021-22 who did not appear in a game the previous year (170 NHL debuts + 2 other regular season debuts 66 players who had played in the NHL in prior seasons.

The scoring bump seems reflected in comparing the two seasons (5.78 average goals per game increased to 6.21 in 2021-22).

So exclusing Vegas and Seattle, Montréal in 2022 was dead last overall, dead last for forward and 29/30 for defensemen.

Montreal is dead overall for both total goals and total points, and by pretty huge margins.

And in fact - they were also dead overall in both in 2021. The 2022 season actually saw an improvement if you could believe that.

Sorry for touting my own horn, but I made a tool as a project that compiles "draft scores" from all of the NHL's draft history. The score (for now I guess) is simply the number of games played by the draftees (regardless of which team they play for).

Hockey Tools

If you start from the legendary 2008 drafts, you can see that Montréal really is one of the worst teams in the league at drafting.... From 2015 on, it seems to be getting better, but as the OP shows, we may be drafting players that play lots of games, but they don't score lots of point...

I did run the games played totals for last season, based on the original drafting/signing teams. Corresponds to the teams and their totals in post 43 above (didn`t seem to have room to add them at the time).

Yeah we've noticed

It does maybe show that there isn't that much to be gained from using home-grown plugs as opposed to free market plugs. Some teams might be overplaying their cost controlled guys just because it would be great if they outperformed their contracts. But in seeking that out teams end up performing all kinds of sunk cost fallacy weighting of their assets.

"We spent a 1st round pick on this guy. We have to give him a shot in the NHL"

Like... do you? What if he's not any good? Just because you blew a pick on him doesn't mean putting him on your roster is a good decision.

And part of it is just random for the Avs. Instead of getting back all picks in trades we've gotten back Girard (5 games played), J. T. Compher (0 Games played) and have shipped out two firsts, two seconds and two thirds for Varlamov, Grubauer, Kuemper, and Georgiev.

While it's obviously better for your picks to land than to miss, there may be a market inefficiency in overvaluing a lottery tickets vs hard currency.

Seems like there is at least one similar trait to last year's Avs and other Cup teams: Their core was largely built through the draft, guys that were there as they learned to win as a team. The Wings had a bit of a similar blue print when they used to bring in a bunch veterans in the summer but the core was mostly the same. Seems clear they have done a bunch of things right in building their team. The challenge is stay up there because everyone wants to be paid once a team has success, that's where the draft can help replace guys moving on with low salaried players.
