If a team wanted to fire their coach and had to look outside their organization, who are the notable coaches that they can hire who aren’t currently under contract?

Gerard Gallant
Mike Babcock ;-)

I’m not sure if Nelson has an out-clause with Hershey/Washington.

Todd never seems to have gotten a fair shake. Oilers made a mistake not hanging on to him when he assumed the HC spot years ago. Not suggesting he’d still be coaching there, but I think he would have developed the team they had further along at the time.

That's who I want the Rangers to get. If Drury is brought back (please God no), I think we're going to hire Sullivan. Coach Q is just terrible optics and hell no on a reunion with Torts.

I'd roll the dice on Nelson. See if we can get our version of Carbery.

I'm pretty sure Mitch Love is going to get his opportunity soon. This is the best pick I know of if you're looking at 1st timers for an NHL head coach.

Love has been super successful in the WHL, AHL, and is currently an assistant in Washington. From what I can tell based on some quick online sleuthing, he focuses on the defense. And he's had a ton of success with international youth programs, being the assistant for Canada at U-17, U-18, World JRs, and Hlinka-Gretzky tournaments.

He was recently interviewed for the HC positions with Calgary and San Jose. It's only a matter of time before someone snatches him up.

Quenneville
Gallant
Woodcroft
McLellan
Boudreau

Probably the biggest names out there
A team would have to be very desperate for Quenneville to be the best option.
Gallant has entered the Laviolette/Tortorella category of too long a track record of having too short of a shelf life with too many teams who did too little with too much talent.
It's gonna be hard for Woodcroft to come back after how much success Knoblouch had. Like a Mike Johnston/Sullivan situation.
Boudreau just doesn't have a good enough resume.

McLellan seems like a guy that would be given another chance. The last couple teams he's coached have had very thin rosters.

Uh, McLellan IS coaching. He’s the Detroit RW Head Coach.
