Value of: Which teams are willing to give Mitch Marner $13M, 7 years?

This off season is going to be entertaining if Marner and Rantanen hit free agency. I imagine they will be commanding 13 to 14 million in free agency.

Again - That's not the comparison I was making.

But it’s a nonsensical comparison either way. They’re such wildly different players, who have had wildly different careers and expectations. And this isn’t even to say oh one is great and the other is trash, they just don’t really make for a meaningful comparison.

Leafs will pay him. Only way they dont is if they have an inside wink wink McDavid will come to them next year. You dont let a player as good as Marner walk even if he doesnt have the playoff success. Theyll spend the next 10 drafts trying to draft the same player.

Hell maybe they let him walk just for the cap space to offer McDavid max money even if they lose out.

Step 1: everyone claims Marner is worth 14m+

Step 2: toronto signs Marner for less than 14m

Step 3: everyone claims Marner is overpaid

We are currently on step 1. I can’t wait for step 2 and 3!
There's a difference between Marner being worth $14m and him getting it. The bidding process starts with the Leafs. The Leafs don't use league compareables to pay "THE BIG 4" contracts they use each other. They overpaid Matthews, Tavares, and Nylander, they just won't suddenly come to their senses on Marners 2nd FA contract.

Leafs will sign him, they will pay big, they call this the ShannaPlan.

Marner will be 28 at the start of his deal (birthday is during playoffs). His final year of the deal, he'll be 35 years old the whole season. With the cap going up and him being a legit star, someone is going to pay him. It'll come down to who's willing to offer the most and what's the most important to him... money (probably a couple million a year) or a chance of winning.

Not saying he is not worth it.....BUT

IMO you pay that kind of money to a franchise player and a player that knows how to win. Marner is a very good player, top one. But I don't put 13M on him that is for sure.

How about a team paying Marner 1x14 with a gentlemen agreement for a 8x13M extension to be signed in January 2026? Marner would be guaranteed 118M$ over 9 years for an avg of 13,11M/yr.

It’s pretty doubtful that a team would sign a 35 yr old Marner to 14M$ contract so his career earnings would probably be higher this way.

But Marner is risking having a career ending injury during the 6 months before his extension is signed which will have him lose out on some seeerious dollars.

Would he take that risk for those additional millions?

13m for next year? yeah right , perhaps if he was a center
How much more production do the Leafs get out of Marner than Nylander? If Nylander is worth $11.5m/13.1%, then how much more will they pay Marner? Nylander had one lucky season and still had less production and the Leafs gave him a blank check.

they can sign marner and not worry about McD because if there was even the slightest chance McD wanted to go to toronto the following year, the leafs would dump whover they had to, no matter the cost.

I bet the CBJ throw a lot at him, not sure if I actually want that. He'd be silly to not look at a smaller market though. Seems the Toronto pressure gets to him.

I think it's going to be way harder to re-sign Mikko than it is Mitch. Teams will throw silly money at him.

5 points tonight.

I can’t see the Leafs letting him go with the injuries of AM. He’s shown they can still win games relying on MM, at least in the regular season. He would also only be 28 so taking him to 35-36 is completely fine. That said, he will probably only want to sign a 3-4 year deal again

If he's only looking for 3-4 years, it would make even more sense for the Ducks to throw an inflated contract at him. None of the kids have shown they're close to receiving a mega contract, Marner will take a lot of pressure off them the next few years while they learn to win regular season games.
