Value of: Which teams are willing to give Mitch Marner $13M, 7 years?

Montreal could afford 13m no problem, but there's zero interest in ruining the team with a contract like that. Pettersson is a way more attractive target, but at 11.6m his cap hit is too high. No way in hell to Marner.
I get the hate because he's a Leaf but ultimately, getting a free 90-100 point player in his prime would be considered by Montreal and lots of others.

Emotions and business decisions don't always work well together.

I dont think it is a question of if they would take him for free.
It's a question if you want to invest 13+ mil in cap on him.

As a Ducks fan, I would gladly spend that money on Marner or Ratanen and sleep like a baby at night.

In the playoffs he turns into a 70 point player. There's just no way Montreal even considers adding a 13m$ winger. You do know Suzuki's cap hit is 7.85m right? Our highest paid player is Laine at 8.7m.

Marner would never even be considered by Montreal. Pettersson is a center so an actual need. But at 11.6 that's still very high. Marner at 13m you can forget that in Montreal 0%.

Spending 13 million on him, might not be wise either,

True. The Leafs signing proven superstars for $13M/year rather than actually paying for some depth sure has gotten them some playoff success...

You’re talking about Detroit passing on Marner for a second liner

Detroit …. Who have made the playoffs once in the last decade? That Detroit?

The same Detroit who won cups on the backs of superstars like lidstrom, datsyuk, fedorov, yzerman, zetterberg, etc?

Do you even know what planet you’re on right now?

Bringing up Fedorov to support an argument in favor of Detroit throwing a wad of cash at Marner is... A bold choice.

... Even weirder when you get into guys like Datsyuk and Zetterberg, who were underpaid, or Yzerman who, along with Shanny, took a pay cut in the 01-02 Cup year to bring more guys on.

The cap will be over 100 million in a few years. Most teams would pay him 13 x 7 as a ufa. So rare that elite talent hits the market so it would be a no brainer for most teams regardless of previous playoff success for the Leafs.

That being said i think he stays in Toronto.

Marner is not leaving the Leafs to joint the Habs anyways. Would be funny to see Marner use any Habs offer to get what he wants from someone else. If another GM is gullible to that, they shouldn't be a GM.

I rather sign Ehlers at a fraction of the cap hit. Or see if Rantanen reaches UFA. If Landeskog comes back, Avs have to make moves to fit Rantanen in.

I know him and his boy are complete playoff duds, but you get paid for regular season production, which they both are elite at. It’s always been like this, it always will.

Marner at 10.9x6 was awful because they wasted so much control and leverage of him being 4 years away from UFA.

If you can get Mitch Marner for FREE in UFA without giving up a single asset. You do that. Superstars are worth far more than that.

Not when you make all the subtractions needed to add almost $30M in cap between those three lol.
Cozens and Byram (if resigned) are somewhere around 14m. With them out, with the huge cap increase, and were barely a floor team next year, no problem.

People talking about a trade for Marner, who I highly doubt will say yes to any trade............

And here I am, a Leafs fan..............god dang I do not want Marner at $13 per for 8 years or even 5 years.

Great player. Really really awesome perimiter QB type player..............

Puts up a ton of points, dictates the style of play..........

Doesn't work in the playoffs.

I really hope he hits UFA and goes away.

Harsh from me, but I think it's probably the wisest thing for the Leafs.

But, they will probably get a deal done and there you have it.

Even if you sub out Cozens for Pettersson, you're sitting on $43M for 9 forwards, $31.5M for 5 defensemen, and $4.75M for 1 goalie.

The "Huge cap increase" (~$4.5M) gets eaten entirely by Jeff Skinner's buyout.

That leaves you about $8.5M to sign 4 forwards, 2 defenseman, and a goalie. Even with Levi likely filling the goalie spot at a minimal contract, you have Peterka eating well over half of the remaining cap and still haven't signed Zucker or Quinn.

Kinda screams cap suicide. Especially when you consider that in the '26 offseason you'll have Skinner's buyout peaking at $6.45M and Andersson, Tuch, and Benson needing new contracts.

I think since they have not gotten a deal done by now gives me some reason to think they still might walk away from him. I think at this point, they may as well just wait till the end of the playoffs. Signing him now would not make sense to me. But, we'll see.
