Faber was a stud. Don’t agree with all the Jack Hughes bashing. Definitely got knocked around but I thought he was all over the ice and creating some good looks.

Considering he sat out the last game before the tournament, it was definitely pleasant to see JEE have a solid all around tournament, along with Faber, and Brodin.
Im hoping this tournament injects some extra confidence going toward the end of the season!

Leafs fans have got to be tired of making excuses for Matthews. It's been almost a decade where he's proven time and time again that he is NOT a big game player in anyway.

But there's always some excuse right? he's injured, he has an ouchie tum tum etc. But he really should be the player that the other teams coach circles his name on the white board before games in the playoffs or tournaments like this, and he just isn't.

with his talent, his goal scoring ability which is the best in the NHL, and with his size, he should be an absolute force in games like this one, but he lacks that drive and competitive fire that's needed and that players on his team demonstrated all around him.

And yes, he had a few really good looks this game, especially in overtime, but you should expect that with his skill level. But he was really largely invisible this entire tournament. I'd be totally willing to chalk this up to injury or whatever other excuse people are saying if he hadn't been showing the trend his entire career of disappearing when the games matter most.

Him being invisible in the biggest moments was completely on brand for his career.

Based on this tournament.

Raised:

Brady Tkachuk - The premier power forward in the game, now everyone knows.
Mitch Marner - A very big game at a big time. That’s big for his narrative.
Jordan Binnington - He may let in the odd softie, but he’s Mr. Clutch for the rest of his life.
Zack Werenski - Not a lot of people watch Columbus. But they should to see him play.

Hurt:

Auston Matthews - I thought he coasted through the first 3 games, and while he got some chances tonight when he got paired with Brady, he once again couldn’t score in the big moment.
Jack Hughes - Looked like a junior player out there.
Devon Toews - He was okay with Makar, bad without. May have played himself off the Olympic team.
Mark Stone - Still a great NHLer, but couldn’t keep up with the pace of best on best.
Adam Fox - He’s good?

Agree with all except didn't notice Toews was bad.

Fox was shockingly bad. One of those Canada goals was 100% his fault.

“Matthews should be a force in a game like this, I know he was a force tonight when it matters but he wasn’t very good in the games that didn’t matter”

Playing injured he was USAs best player outside of Slavin. Don’t really know why the onus is solely on him when he showed up and produced in the biggest moment.

> Devon Toews - He was okay with Makar, bad without. May have played himself off the Olympic team.

Anyone who has this opinion does not know how to watch dmen and is only looking at what dmen are doing with the puck.
Get real, Toews looked like he was stuck in mud. Fumbling the puck, giveaways deep in his zone. He was completely out of his league.

I don’t watch the Avs much and maybe this was just a bad showing. The best on best speed was clearly too much for his game.

Jack Hughes had created a lot in the the previous games, creating several good chances for his line mates who couldn't convert. In terms of positioning he looked a bit lost at times, but we have to remember that he never plays wing with the NJD, so he had to adapt to a new role on top of adapting to a new system.

Yes, it's everyone else's fault.

I don’t a chance to watch Slavin enough, dude was incredible. Saved at least one goal and that jump block shot was orgasmic for guys that like defensive hockey. What a player.

Slavin established himself as the top US defenseman. Next year in the Olympics, if he's healthy he should be anchoring the top defensive line playing heavy minutes in critical spots. The fact that he isn't a Norris finalist every year is something we'll look back on as an insane decision by hockey writers in the future.

Binnington showed that Boston just needs to sign him. He's godlike in that arena.

Adam Fox was terrible. And I really hope this helps highlight that just because you can score from the blue line doesn't mean you're a great defenseman. The guy couldn't find a defensive position even if Siri pinpointed it on a map.

This is not what I was saying. But advanced stats (which I do take with a grain of salt) show that he was creating a whole lot before the championship game. I haven't checked the stats for yesterday, but he definitely seemed to have a rougher game after being put on a new line.

There is no love for defensive dmen anymore. Weber should have multiple Norris trophies, but guys like Fox and Subban have hardware.

I need to watch Slavin more, he was the best player in the game last night. Incredible to watch a guy that dominant at the backend. Different player but that defensive dominance reminds me of Weber.

For the US I think the top tier for me was:

Brady T
Faber
Slavin

Next tier

McAvoy was great but obviously got injured
Larkin raised his stock and was really noticeable

Those are the guys that kind of jumped out at me and surprised me a bit by how much they elevated their games, or how big their roles were for team USA.

slavin was better than advertised which is hard to do

harley should be ahead of sanheim/parayko/doughty on the team canada defense rankings

brady and sanderson getting a bump is great from a sens fan perspective

faber looked good

the bad or at least worse off
fox
jack hughes
stone
marchand
sanheim
parayko

the pretty much neutral
matthews (had a solid game but just seems to keep choking when the pressure dials up)
reinhart
toews (didnt look the best without makar but was still better than sanheim/parayko/doughty

the why the **** didnt he play
connor - still a baffling decision

As a Canadian fan, there seemed to be countless times I saw the puck moved up to who I thought was #29 in the neutral zone with white ice in front him and I'm thinking "let's go".....but then I realize it is #13....ugh....that guy didn't impress and Stone looked incredibly slow.

Stone, Marchand and Doughty looked slow but I dont know if Hockey Canada can risk excluding them for Olympics ..
They seemed to be the glue that kept team together off the ice and provided some sparks on the ice.

Raised:

MacKinnon - How does he raise it more? He is the current best player in the game
McDavid - If MacKinnon leaped McDavid...he must have lowered his stock. Wrong. He finally had his moment
Marner - Ill go back to hating him shortly. But....he did it as well. Puck control was marvellous
Slavin - wish Canada and the Habs had a player like him. Elite defensive d man.
Brady Tkachuk - If the Sens ever make the playoffs this guy will go beast mode. Unreal. KK pick hurts so bad
Demidov - Let's see how many of you actually read what I am writing here.
Crosby - added to his legacy. Captain Canada.
Rackell - elite shot on that guy

Hurt:

Matthews - thought he played good last night. But.....he needs to win something. It's a delicate balance.
Stone - Wasn't impressed.
Hughes - when the size and speed pick up he looks like a boy. No dipsy-doodle shit in this tourney.
EP40 - putrid
