Speculation: Which player will get the worst contract in this free agent class ?

Boeser has always been slow and his game doesn’t rely on speed or physicality, so he could age ok. He is somewhat one-dimensional though not a defensive liability.

Bennett and Boeser scream has easy overpay targets. Especially Bennett with his playoff success. Paying either above 8M is just asking for disappointment.

Marner is bound to get a bloated contract, but he'll at least produce in the regular season to justify it. Whether he can finally translate that to a good playoff performance after from Toronto remains to be seen.

Marner, tiny and progressively getting slower and slower, also brings a depressing negativety to the dressing room if media/fans become critical of his play. Which is inevitable when he does not live up to his massive contract.

He is 28... and the skill rankings in the playoffs is amongst the worst in the playoffs. Super slow, with a super slow shot. Add to it that he cannot cycle whatsoever because of an extreme lack of strength (have I mentioned he doesnt train in the offseason until told to by Leaf management this past offseason)...its no wonder why he fails so miserably at playoff hockey. He tries to make up for his complete inability to skate or cycle by making fancy passes that are more often than not intercepted or blocked and the puck goes the other way.

Hes got some doozies of achievements like:
- going over 100 consecutive games without a PP goal, despite playing on the #1 unit
- going 16 consecutive playoff games without a goal

One thing he is consitent at is being amongst the playoffs least skilled and they've appeae ro have diminished even more since 2022.

Bennett is only getting paid $4.425/year, and the previous contract he received $2.55. Bennett has never gotten paid, and wasted a lot of time on the 4th line in Calgary. This is his only chance to cash in. He'd be really dumb to sign a discount or a short term contract.
I think 8x7.5 with Florida would be a discount. If market is 7x9, he wouldn't be leaving too much on the table. The 8th year is a powerful advantage.

people haven't been used to it for several years, so many still think 7m is first line dollars, when 3rd liners are regularly getting 5+
A lot of internal caps are going to get blown to smithereens. If Montreal adds anyone, the internal, individual Suzuki/Caufield cap is gone.

Brock Nelson.

He’s really good and going to be in demand. AAV he gets will be deserved but some teams are going to try to outbid others by offering longer term and somebody’s going to have him under contract at like 38-40 years old.

I'm sure he still talks to guys that he played with, during his time, who might be in management situations. But in terms of trade rumors or what have you, he's not reliable at all. That and one of his big "sources" was Doug MacLean who is not as connected as he once was with most of his peers having retired as well.
Doug McLean called Tocchet leaving Van months before it happened.
