I also think it can't be ignored that he didn't play at all last year. That's a year of development that he missed out on.
Shane Wright is no Connor McDavid, but Connor was als granted exceptional status and they both put up 66 pts in their 15/16 year old seasons. McDavid did in in 63 games, Shane did it in 58. McDavid scored 25 goals that year, Shane score 39.
Shane is not generational like McDavid, but he is still an exceptional player.
I get that some posters have reserves about picking Wright 1st overall as he's had some flaws in his game this season, but with this guy's track record, I have a hard time seeing us pass over that type of player. Something bugs me in a major way in Kingston. The coach, the style of play, his teammates....I don't know, something is off.
I wonder how he'd have looked playing for a team like London.
I've noticed this too. It's like he knows nobody on the D can drive offense, so he goes back to fill the offensive D role, which limits how he can implicate himself offensively. Combine that with DD 2.0 Caputi, and it's a really weird situation. He will already be picked by then, but I guess we will be watching this summer's WJC with great interest.
I will try to watch all Kingston games before they get eliminated. I watched 2 periods last night and yeah, I was not awed. But the team is indeed an absolute mess, I can't stress that enough.
Wright seemed extremely smart with the puck, but he was covering for his D... It was strange. He wasn't implicated offensively... really weird. He still managed to get 2 As though.
I don't know the details if Wright. But the negative I hear is that he didn't progress enough after that 39 goal season you referenced. Great that he was a phenom at such a young age. But he has to still keep progressing.
So we'll see what happens...
I can think of a couple soccer players Bojan Kircik and Freddy Adu, who were phenoms at 14, 15, looked like the all time greats did at that age. Then had medicocre careers.
I do wonder what they'll do with Wright next year.
I hope that they do what Bergevin should have done with Galchenyuk and Kotkaniemi:
9-game tryout, with good minutes in those 9 games, then send him back to junior and let him compete in the WJCs. Maybe join the AHL at the end of the year.
Let Wright compete for the 2024 Calder trophy.
That would actually be a good thing, since pro-level conditioning will raise his ceiling, if he has the maturity to put it into practice. I'd rather have that problem than get a gym rat whose underwhelming top-level talent is exactly what you see.Wright is still my number 1. But he sometimes looks like he has conditioning issues.

Patience...........Patience is the way to go..............unless he is lights out, big time, and wows everyone is amazing in his 9 games..........and makes it impossible to not stay.I do wonder what they'll do with Wright next year.

I've said it for years with during the various tenures of dinosaur coaches. The team benefits from a coach who sees his(/her) job as reconciling short-term success with long-term nurturing of emerging players. Like some of the top coaches in Premier League who trust young players: Pep G at Man City with Youth Academy kids like Foden, Mikel A at Arsenal with kids like Saka and Martinelli, and so on.Glad StLouis will be coaching

Someone who undercuts the value of his opinions. Are you sure you're in the right place?... So take my opinions for what they’re worth…
This, I'd trust MSL with Wright, way before I sent him back to Caputi.if they want Wright back in the OHL i hope they force Kingston management to trade him or they keep him in the NHL because that team and coach is a complete mess
