Which Player Do You Take For A Playoff Run: Thornton, Matthews Or Stamkos?

Which player would you prefer for a playoff run?

He was outscored by St. Louis, Lecavalier, and uhhh Steve Downie in 2011 playoffs

The track record certainly doesn’t look promising, but you never know I suppose. Thornton and Matthews didn’t/haven’t had the “what if” seasons of missing the playoffs when they were at their peaks at least.

All 3 have been quite underwelming in the playoffs.

Thornton doesn’t have 1 playoff year where he is over a ppg
Stamkos has 1 playoff year where he was over a ppg, that was last year 6 pts in 5 gp
Matthew’s has 2 playoff years where he was over ppg, that was 9 pts in 7 gp and 6 pts in 5 gp.

Factoring in that Matthew’s is the better goal scorer and better defensive centre of the three, I have to begrudgingly go with him.

Stamkos brings nothing to the table out of these 3. As underwhelming as Matthews' goal-scoring is in the playoffs, he at least puts up a ppg and plays good defense. Thornton is clearly better than Stamkos as well but I take Matthews.

Honestly looking at those 3, I think you just forfeit and take your chances the following year hoping the RNG Gods bring you something better.

Stamkos for me.

Matthews is still young enough to change this with a monstrous playoff run or two, but time is running out on his prime years and it's not looking likely.
